Hartwell Lake - COE/Oconee Point

Overview

Oconee Point Campground, managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, offers a quintessential lakeside experience on the Georgia-South Carolina border. Nestled along the shores of Hartwell Lake, this park is celebrated for its natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere. Unlike commercial resorts, it prioritizes the great outdoors, providing visitors with a secluded retreat characterized by mature hardwood forests and expansive water views that define the Upstate South Carolina region.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Seneca, SC, the park sits on a peninsula that extends deep into the 56,000-acre reservoir. The surrounding landscape is a lush mix of pine and deciduous trees, providing ample shade and privacy between campsites. Its proximity to the Blue Ridge Mountains means the air is often crisp, and the terrain offers a rolling, scenic backdrop that makes every drive into the park a visual treat for travelers looking for a quiet escape.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features 70 well-maintained campsites, most of which include electric and water hookups suitable for various RV sizes. Guests have access to essential facilities including a dump station, hot showers, and laundry equipment. For recreation, the park offers a multi-lane boat ramp, a designated swimming beach, and a playground for children. The sites are known for being exceptionally level and spacious, often featuring a fire ring and picnic table for evening gatherings under the stars.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water sports are the primary draw here, with world-class bass fishing and boating opportunities right at your doorstep. Just a short drive away, you can explore the vibrant town of Seneca or visit Clemson University for a game day experience or a stroll through the botanical gardens. Nature lovers often venture further into Oconee County to discover numerous cascading waterfalls and hiking trails that lead deep into the Appalachian foothills for a day of exploration.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is an ideal match for outdoor enthusiasts who prefer a quiet, rustic environment over a busy resort. It is perfect for families looking to spend their days swimming and kayaking, as well as anglers seeking easy access to the water. Because of the large, wooded sites, it is also a top choice for RVers who value privacy and a genuine connection with nature while staying within a short drive of modern conveniences.

We were at site 13... it was lovely. Very spacious and flat. Sunshine and shade, and a lovely view of the lake. Everyone was super friendly, quiet hours were, well, quiet. I love this place!!!

We enjoyed the park, the lake was so calming and relaxing. Nice wide camp spots, easy set up. The camp hosts were helpful and neighbors friendly. We'll be back.

Well since it's a campground that doesn't really have rooms and has campsites. So the campsites some are good and some are not so good depending on what you personally like. The service is power and water on the site so they all worked well. Of course the location is on lake Hartwell South Carolina or Georgia depending on what side you're on. Oconee point of course is on the South Carolina side and it is in a wonderful spot.

Beautiful campground. Honestly some of the nicest camping spots I've seen. My only complaint is the gate. I understand not allowing anyone in during quiet hours (10pm - 6am) but not allowing anyone out during quiet hours unless it is deemed an emergency (in which case you have to wake the camp attendant) is kind of wild.

Absolutely loved our stay. 180° view of the lake. Beautiful sunrise and sunset. Staff was very friendly and park was quiet and clean. Will definitely come back.
