Hartwell Lake - COE/Paynes Creek
Overview
Paynes Creek Campground offers a serene escape on the Georgia side of Hartwell Lake, one of the Southeast’s largest and most popular recreation areas. As a well-maintained Corps of Engineers destination, it provides a perfect balance of natural beauty and essential comforts for modern travelers. Visitors frequent this park for its wooded campsites that often offer direct views of the water. It is a place where the sounds of the forest and the gentle lapping of waves take precedence over highway noise, making it a favorite for those seeking a peaceful lakeside retreat.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just a short drive from the city of Hartwell, Georgia, the park sits on a peninsula that juts into the massive 56,000-acre lake. The surroundings are characterized by thick canopies of hardwoods and pines, providing ample shade during the warm Southern summers. Because of its location, the park feels secluded, yet it remains accessible for those needing to restock supplies in town or explore the rolling hills of the Piedmont region.
Amenities & Park Features
The facility features dozens of sites equipped with water and electric hookups, accommodating various RV sizes. Beyond the standard campsites, guests have access to several recreational features:
- A 9.4-mile multi-use trail perfect for mountain biking and hiking
- A paved boat ramp and courtesy dock for easy water access
- Clean bathhouses and a convenient on-site dump station
For families, the playground and designated swimming areas provide plenty of entertainment within walking distance of the sites.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Beyond the park boundaries, visitors can explore the charming downtown area of Hartwell for local dining and shopping. Fishing is a major draw here, with the lake being famous for its striped and largemouth bass. If you want to explore more of the shoreline, Tugaloo State Park and several local marinas are within easy reach. The nearby Hartwell Dam and Big Oaks Recreation Area offer additional spots for picnicking and photography along the Savannah River.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize recreation and natural surroundings over resort-style luxuries. It is a fantastic choice for mountain biking groups and boaters who want immediate access to the water from their front door. Families who enjoy traditional camping activities like roasting marshmallows and birdwatching will find the atmosphere welcoming and safe. With generous spacing between sites and plenty of privacy, Paynes Creek is a top-tier Georgia destination for those who want to truly unplug.

We went and checked out the campground. It has power and water on sites. Most of the sites are pull through. Decent sites. We like the campground. Plan on staying here for a few weekends.
