Hawk Springs State Recreation Area
Overview
Hawk Springs State Recreation Area is a peaceful oasis tucked away in the southeastern corner of Wyoming. Known primarily for its scenic 1,000-acre reservoir, this state park offers a quiet escape for those who appreciate natural beauty and water-based recreation. It serves as a vital habitat for various migratory bird species and provides a secluded atmosphere that feels worlds away from the busier tourist corridors found further west in the state.
Location & Surroundings
Situated roughly 20 miles south of Torrington near the small community of Hawk Springs, the park is nestled within the vast, rolling plains. The Hawk Springs Reservoir serves as the centerpiece of the landscape, surrounded by classic Wyoming prairie and clusters of mature cottonwood trees. Travelers will find the location easily accessible via US-85, offering a convenient yet remote-feeling stop for those exploring the eastern edge of the state near the Nebraska border.
Amenities & Park Features
The park is designed to offer a rustic camping experience, which is perfect for self-contained RVs and travelers who enjoy off-grid living. While you won't find full hookups here, the park provides well-spaced primitive campsites equipped with picnic tables and fire rings for evening campfires. On-site facilities include vault toilets and potable water hydrants. Boaters can take advantage of the public boat ramp and floating docks to access the water easily during the summer months.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the main highlight, with boating and fishing for walleye, channel catfish, and largemouth bass being the most popular pastimes. The area is also a renowned destination for birdwatching, where visitors often spot blue herons and various waterfowl near the shoreline. For a historical day trip, travelers can visit the nearby Fort Laramie National Historic Site, a major landmark of the Oregon Trail, to immerse themselves in regional pioneer history.
Who This Park Is Best For
This recreation area is ideal for independent RVers and boondocking fans who value tranquility and natural scenery over modern resort luxuries. It is a fantastic match for anglers and birdwatchers who want direct access to the water in a quiet, unpretentious setting. If your travel style involves relaxing by the water and watching the sunset in a peaceful, uncrowded environment, this park is a perfect fit for your Wyoming itinerary.

We had a great time here, the water wasn't too cold and the BBQ pits were in a good location. Make sure to bring some strong bug spray, and whatever else it takes to combat the mosquitoes and flies!

A nice little campground. Little hard to get to down a very rough road and into the Lake.
