Hawn

Overview

Hawn State Park offers a serene getaway within one of Missouri's most geologically unique landscapes. This destination is often cited as a favorite for those who appreciate the scenic beauty of the Ozarks combined with rare pine forests. The park provides a quiet atmosphere where the focus remains on the natural environment rather than commercial distractions. It is a place where RVers can truly disconnect and enjoy the rhythmic sounds of the forest while staying in a well-maintained state-managed facility.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Ste. Genevieve, the park is famous for its sandstone canyons and clear streams. The landscape is dominated by the shortleaf pine, which is Missouri's only native pine tree. As you drive into the area, the transition from rolling farmland to rugged woodland is striking. The surroundings include Pickle Creek, which meanders through exposed rock and shut-ins, providing a picturesque and tranquil backdrop for the entire camping area.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground caters to RV travelers with both basic and electric campsites. While the park maintains a rustic vibe, it provides essential modern conveniences to ensure a comfortable stay for those in trailers or motorhomes. Park features include:

  • A modern shower house with heated water and laundry facilities.
  • Access to a convenient dump station and central water spigots.
  • Shaded sites equipped with fire rings and picnic tables.

Most sites are shaded by a thick canopy of oaks and pines, offering privacy and a sense of seclusion that is often missing from private RV resorts.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Hiking is the primary draw, with the Whispering Pines Trail offering miles of scenic loops through the backcountry. For a shorter walk, the Pickle Creek Trail provides stunning views of the rock formations and water features. Beyond the park borders, visitors can explore the historic French colonial architecture in downtown Ste. Genevieve or visit several acclaimed local vineyards. The nearby Pickle Springs Natural Area offers additional geological wonders just a short drive away.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and hikers who prioritize immediate access to trailheads and natural beauty. Because the sites vary in size and layout, it is best suited for small to mid-sized RVs or travel trailers. It is the perfect choice for travelers seeking a quiet retreat and a genuine connection with nature. If your goal is to photograph rare landscapes or enjoy a campfire under a dark sky, Hawn is a top-tier Missouri choice.

Beautiful park. Really nice campground. Clean bathrooms and individual showers. Firewood and ice can be purchased from camground host. They have stickers, patches and walking stick medallions. Verizon cell service was 1 bar and not very good. If you go to the top of the hill its a better signal. They also have free WiFi at the park office. A must see is the pickle creek natural area hike. It's two miles but lots to see and explore.

Such a beautiful park. Very peaceful. They have several walking trails. Place to camp. A little park area with picnic tables. Could spend the whole day here. The rocks are really pretty and different. Lots of granite.

Visited the park for a look at the overlook walkway by the park office and then a hike on White Connector 3. Following that, I took a short drive along Park Drive (doesn't every MO State Park have a Park Drive?) and ran across a sight in a camping area that I've never seen before in any park. Check out the photos for Santa-fied skeleton buddies. On 23 July 2025. People do some amazing things........

We did the Pickle Creek trail and had a lot of fun. Beautiful trail alongside the creek. Lots of rocks and roots to navigate but it just made it more interesting. There were restrooms with pit toilets in the parking lot, not terrible but not great either. Looked like there were nice picnic areas, but we didn't use them.

Nice and clean park! Large with many trails. We did the Pickle Creek Trail, which was beautiful and scenic, but also not easy. Definitely be prepared for a more difficult hike, with lots of rocks and downed trees to climb over.
