Hecla Junction Campground
Overview
Hecla Junction Campground offers a quintessential Colorado experience for those looking to immerse themselves in the high desert landscape. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, this site provides a rustic, back-to-basics camping experience rather than a modern resort atmosphere. It is the perfect destination for travelers who prefer natural scenery and quiet nights over paved pads and luxury park amenities.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in Salida, CO, the campground is strategically located right along the Arkansas River. The terrain features dramatic canyon views and desert vegetation, providing a striking backdrop for any RV trip. Because it is positioned within the Browns Canyon National Monument area, the environment is rugged and pristine. The location is relatively remote, ensuring that visitors enjoy a peaceful setting away from the traffic of major highways.
Amenities & Park Features
This campground is designed for self-contained units, so visitors should plan to be entirely self-sufficient during their stay. Amenities are limited to essential facilities including vault toilets and fire rings at each site. There are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups available, which makes it an ideal spot for dry camping. The sites are well-spaced and gravel-surfaced, offering plenty of room for trailers and smaller motorhomes to park comfortably.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw for visitors is the immediate access to world-class whitewater rafting and kayaking on the Arkansas River. Fishing enthusiasts also frequent the area for its exceptional trout populations. For those who prefer staying on land, the surrounding trails offer excellent opportunities for mountain biking and hiking with expansive views of the canyon. Salida is a short drive away, providing access to local shops and dining options.
Who This Park Is Best For
Hecla Junction is best suited for nature lovers and outdoor adventurers who do not require modern RV park luxuries. It is a fantastic choice for those camping in camper vans, truck campers, or smaller travel trailers who want a true wilderness feel. Was surprised for $28.00 a night, there was no trash cans in the campground or area. Had to pack all trash back out. Site was nice, but does not have any shade. Would not stay again due to cost.

Have stayed in sites 1112 and 1113 as a group when rafting Browns Canyon many times over the years. Beautiful location. Well maintained. Be sure to reserve early. We love this campground.

Drove thru, wouldn't stay there. Certainly wouldn't pay what they want to be there... Colorado has a heightening fetish with using boulders to limit parking access. Most spots are far from level. Bad vibes when its "managed" this way. Hard pass for me.

Beautiful, well maintained campsites on the river. Clean pit toilets available. Campsites have decent privacy and space between. With the river sound in the background, it helps dampen noise from your neighbors nearby. Great spot for rafting overnights/logistics! Att cell range coverage is good.

Great, well laid out campsite tucked a good 15 mins off the highway and by the Arkansas River. Well maintained dirt road access. Some steeps and curves but nothing scary, just take your time. The river side sites have trails down to the river (maybe50 feet below). Great views and very quiet at night. No water or electric so bring everything you need. RV spots are well maintained and pretty level. Each site has a tent site too along with picnic table. We live about 1.5h away and this is a regular weekend bolt hole for us. With Salida and it's great restaurants and biking just down the road this campsite will remain a favorite in the area.
