Helena-Lewis & Clark/Dry Wolf

Overview

Dry Wolf Campground, nestled within the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest, offers a serene escape into the rugged beauty of central Montana. Tucked away in the Judith Ranger District, this site provides a traditional camping experience where the focus remains on the natural landscape rather than modern luxuries. It serves as an ideal base for those looking to explore the Little Belt Mountains while enjoying the peaceful sounds of the nearby creek and the scent of evergreen forests.

Location & Surroundings

Located approximately 20 miles southwest of Stanford, Montana, the campground is situated in a deeply forested canyon. The surrounding terrain is characterized by dramatic limestone cliffs and dense stands of Douglas fir and ponderosa pine. Visitors will find themselves immersed in a high-altitude environment where the Dry Wolf Creek winds through the area, providing a cool and refreshing atmosphere even during the peak of the summer season.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a rustic, primitive facility designed for travelers who prefer self-sufficiency and a slower pace of life. The park features basic but well-maintained amenities to ensure a comfortable stay, including:

  • Vault toilets and a hand-pump for potable water.
  • Spacious sites equipped with heavy-duty picnic tables and metal fire rings.
  • Direct access to several trailheads located within the camping loops.

There are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups available at the sites, making it a perfect spot for boondocking enthusiasts who want to disconnect from the grid and enjoy the quiet of the wilderness.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for this remote region. The Dry Wolf Trail is easily accessible from the campground, offering miles of hiking and mountain biking opportunities through scenic mountain vistas. Anglers often frequent the creek for small brook trout, while wildlife enthusiasts may spot elk, deer, or black bears in their natural habitat. For a longer excursion, the Judith River Wildlife Management Area is within driving distance, offering expansive views and further exploration of Montana’s diverse high-country ecosystems.

Who This Park Is Best For

Dry Wolf is best suited for nature lovers and backcountry explorers who appreciate solitude and a quiet environment over commercial amenities. Because the access roads and individual sites are somewhat narrow and winding, it is ideal for tent campers, van lifers, and owners of smaller travel trailers or truck campers. If you are looking to escape the crowds of more commercialized parks and want a genuine mountain experience, this secluded forest service gem is the perfect fit for your Montana itinerary.

$ 15 a day no maintenance, roads are terrible. Weeds are crazy, stumps all over. Poor training on land management, but.... very beautiful place. Stream always has a music to it.

Great place to get away and enjoy the forest, a great source of water and the creek, very quiet. The campground is $15 per night. It would be hard to get to during the winter months. The roads are gravel the entire way and narrow at parts if you have a big RV rig then take it slow. There is cattle grazing through out. The drive up is beautiful. The creek is right on the camp ground. The spots are spacious. There is a water fill up spout right before the camp ground. This is a great place to go have a peaceful retreat and recharge.

A lovely campground! Spaces are pretty far apart, large, and idyllic. Lots of hiking in the area. A creek provides lovely white noise. :)

Great campground! Pack in pack out with fire pits/grates, and a nice picnic table at each of the 25+ sites. $5/might fee as of 2018, looks like it's going up to $15 in 2019. Beautiful Dry Wolf Creek is crystal clear. Hand pump water and clean vault toilets. 2.5mi hiking trail where you might spot mountain goats! Not overly busy even on Memorial Day weekend. No reservations. 22mi south of Stanford MT on a nice gravel road. Dogs welcome on a leash.
