Hell Creek
Overview
Hell Creek State Park offers a rugged and scenic getaway on the southern shores of Fort Peck Lake in Montana. This park serves as a primary gateway to the massive Hell Creek Arm, a destination renowned for its deep blue waters and stark, badland topography. Visitors often come here to escape the bustle of more developed parks, finding a serene landscape where the vast Montana prairie meets the water's edge in a dramatic display of natural beauty.
Location & Surroundings
Located approximately 26 miles north of Jordan, MT, the park is situated within the world-famous Hell Creek Formation. This area is globally recognized for its rich deposits of dinosaur fossils and unique geological layers. The journey to the park involves a lengthy gravel road, which sets the tone for a truly remote experience. The surroundings are characterized by rolling sagebrush hills and rugged rock formations that overlook the expansive Missouri River reservoir system.
Amenities & Park Features
The park provides various camping accommodations designed to support different travel styles. While the environment is wild, the facilities provide necessary comforts for a multi-day stay. Key park features include:
- Several campsites equipped with electrical hookups for RVs.
- A multi-lane boat ramp and large parking area for easy water access.
- A dedicated fish cleaning station and seasonal dump station.
In addition to these amenities, the park offers vault toilets, potable water, and a playground area, making it a functional basecamp for those exploring the Fort Peck Lake region.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Fishing is the primary draw for most visitors, as the lake is home to trophy-sized walleye, northern pike, and smallmouth bass. For those interested in history, the Garfield County Museum in Jordan showcases incredible fossil finds from the local area. Nature lovers can explore the fringes of the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge, which offers unparalleled opportunities for wildlife viewing, including sightings of mule deer, pronghorn, and various migratory birds.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for self-sufficient RVers who prioritize access to nature and water recreation over resort-style luxuries. Because of its remote location, it appeals most to travelers who enjoy quiet nights, dark skies for stargazing, and a slower pace of life. It is a fantastic choice for serious anglers and families looking to combine a camping trip with a bit of prehistoric exploration in one of Montana's most distinct landscapes.

I called during a busy time but they call back when time permitted. They call back almost immediately. Professional, friendly & helpful would describe my impression. I would give them and the campground five stars. It is an oasis in the Missouri Breaks somewhat isolated but great fishing and hiking.

Great & affordable camping at a beautiful location! Beware the rough road to get there, though. Signal minimal, but wifi at the office. Notes: There are electric sites, but they do not have water or sewer hookups. Inconvenient, but there are dump stations & water faucets available to fill up with. Sites are spacious! You can bring all the toys, and have plenty of room. Hunting access areas nearby, check local regulations, of course, and valid licenses are necessary. The playground is nice, and the kids enjoyed it, nothing extremely special about it. There is one decent bathroom available with a few stalls & showers. The shower is not free - it costs $1 per shower, which isn't fantastic, but they're trying to conserve water, which is understandable. Staff are extremely nice & helpful - make sure to ask them if you need anything! Some trees, but not a ton. Shade can be an issue at many of the sites! The big one - the road. It's a long way in here 24 miles from Jordan, MT, on a rough, winding road. Washboard is common & will shake you and your rig bad! If you don't want to deal with the 1 hour or more drive, this is probably not for you. I will come back again, but only for a trip of 3-4+ days, because the road really beats you up.

4 stars because of shower services. Bathrooms are kept but there is a $1 fee per shower. Not a horrible thing because people abuse their length of showers, but the coin machine was never working to provide one with quarters to use to operate the showers and the office never seemed to be open. High note: loved loved loved the fish cleaning station. Grounder and water to clean your catch. Much appreciated! Overall a fun 5 days but its a boaters world not much for shore fishing too many weeds.

it’s called hell creek because the road to get in and out is hell! the area is beautiful but because it’s a state park i was expecting hiking trails, of which there are none. or at least we couldn’t find any signage. you can’t even do a loop around the lake. being from the great lakes region we were underwhelmed by the lake itself but apparently there is good fishing. there are lots of bathrooms and picnic areas. washboard road made the whole journey not worth it - one of the worst i’ve ever driven on. it is a real shame because the park is so beautiful.

Camp along edge of the lake. Popular boat dock for locals. Potable water tastes terrible. Bring your own.
