Managed by Idaho Power, this park serves as a premier destination for RVers seeking to explore the deepest river gorge in North America. The park is situated on the banks of the Hells Canyon Reservoir, providing a lush, green contrast to the surrounding basalt cliffs and desert terrain. It provides a peaceful retreat for those navigating the scenic but challenging roads of Eastern Oregon.

Tucked deep into the canyon floor near the Snake River, the park is accessible from the gateway community of Joseph via the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway. The surroundings are characterized by dramatic elevation changes and the massive, ancient stone walls of the canyon. This is a remote destination where cell service is limited, allowing travelers to truly disconnect and immerse themselves in the geological wonders and diverse wildlife found along the Oregon-Idaho border.
Amenities & Park Features
The park is highly regarded for its top-tier infrastructure, featuring large, paved RV sites that are level and meticulously maintained. Most sites offer comprehensive utility services to ensure a comfortable stay. Key features include:
- Full hookup sites with water, sewer, and electricity.
- A multi-lane boat launch providing easy reservoir access.
- Expansive, manicured grassy areas and shade trees.
Guests also have access to modern restrooms and hot showers, making it a comfortable choice for extended stays.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Water activities dominate the experience, with excellent opportunities for boating and fishing for species like smallmouth bass and prehistoric sturgeon. Visitors often take a short drive to the Hells Canyon Dam to witness the sheer scale of the engineering or embark on a professional jet boat tour through the wild sections of the Snake River. Hikers can also explore the rugged trails of the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, which offer breathtaking panoramic views of the canyon rim and river below.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for outdoor adventurers and anglers who want a comfortable and reliable base camp while exploring a remote wilderness. Its well-paved roads and spacious site layouts make it an excellent choice for big-rig travelers who might otherwise find canyon camping difficult. If you appreciate a manicured, park-like landscape paired with some of the most primitive and rugged terrain in the United States, this destination provides a perfect balance of modern comfort and natural adventure.

Absolutely worth the long drive. Hells Canyon offers one of the most beautiful and peaceful canyon drives we’ve ever experienced — stunning scenery and serene views at every turn.

We drives the dirty road of Snake River Rd, it was beyond expectations, strongly recommended.

Absolutely beautiful! If you're thinking about visiting, you definitely should. It took me a while to finally make it to Hells Canyon. Definitely wish I would have went sooner.

Beautiful drive. The 22 miles up the snake river to the dam will take you about an hour. The road is very very curvy. It is worth the trip. Take your time and enjoy!

Beautiful drive and scenery. So some deer on a hike to go find the hieroglyphs which we never did find. But it was a beautiful area. But it was a beautiful area.
