Henderson County State Conservation Area

Overview

Henderson County State Conservation Area offers a peaceful retreat along the backwaters of the Mississippi River. Spanning approximately 600 acres, this site provides a natural escape for those who appreciate the quiet beauty of Western Illinois. It is primarily known for its access to Gladstone Lake and the expansive river ecosystem, making it a staple for outdoor enthusiasts who prefer a rustic atmosphere over a commercial resort setting.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just south of the village of Oquawka, the park is characterized by its wooded landscapes and proximity to the water. The surrounding area consists of fertile bottomlands and diverse timber, offering a secluded feel while remaining accessible via State Route 164. The highlight of the geography is Gladstone Lake, a 27-acre body of water that serves as the centerpiece for the park's recreational activities and provides a calm focal point for the campground.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features well-maintained camping facilities designed for both comfort and utility. RVers will find several convenient features to enhance their stay:

  • 48 Class A sites equipped with electricity and access to a modern shower building.
  • A convenient dump station and frost-free hydrants located within the camping area.
  • Public boat ramps providing direct access to the river and Gladstone Lake.

For those who prefer a more traditional experience, there are also primitive sites available, alongside several shaded picnic areas with grills and tables scattered throughout the grounds for visitor use.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Fishing is the primary draw here, with opportunities to catch bluegill, channel catfish, and bullhead in the well-stocked waters. Visitors can explore the scenic hiking trails that wind through the timber or visit the historic Oquawka Wagon Bridge nearby. Just a short drive away across the river, the city of Burlington, Iowa, offers additional dining and shopping options, as well as the famous Snake Alley, recognized as one of the most crooked streets in the world.

Who This Park Is Best For

This conservation area is ideal for anglers and nature photographers looking for a quiet base camp. It serves as an excellent stop for RVers who enjoy birdwatching or simple, water-based recreation without the crowds found at larger state parks. If you prefer wildlife viewing and a slower pace of life, this Illinois gem provides the perfect backdrop for a relaxing getaway focused on the great outdoors and the rhythms of the river.

Grass needed mowed. No envelopes to pay for camping. 1 day someone came and collected garbage. Otherwise beautiful quiet park.

Rather unimpressive, but great for those who want a quiet walk in the woods. The hiking trail is 2 miles.

Park is very quiet. There is electric hook up at each of the 54 sites. Plenty of outhouse-style bathrooms. Dump station and water fill station. Handicap spots are concrete pads. Plenty of grills and picnic stations. Not the most modern but…hey, you’re camping! Boat dock right on the river. Lots of shade. Relaxing.

It's a nice quiet little Park RVs can camp there people some residents live out there pretty quiet all in all I know they have facilities very limited. I grew up in area and have spent a lot of time there. Also a boat launch, I don't know the hours there or the season I think it ends in September 30th?
