Hiawatha/Bay View
Overview
Located within the eastern portion of the Hiawatha National Forest, the Bay View Campground offers a serene escape along the rugged coastline of Lake Superior. This rustic destination is designed for travelers who value natural beauty over modern luxuries, providing a peaceful environment where the forest meets the fresh water. As a National Forest Service facility, it emphasizes a primitive camping experience that allows visitors to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with the scenic wonders of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
Location & Surroundings
Situated near the small community of Raco, Michigan, the park sits directly on the shores of Whitefish Bay. The landscape is characterized by a mix of northern hardwoods and pine, providing ample shade and privacy between campsites. The most striking feature of the location is the immediate access to Lake Superior, where the rhythmic sound of waves hitting the sandy shoreline creates a tranquil atmosphere. Travelers often appreciate the proximity to Highway M-28, which serves as a gateway to exploring the remote reaches of the Upper Peninsula.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a dry camping location, meaning there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups available at the individual sites. The park provides essential facilities including vault toilets and drinking water sourced from communal hand pumps. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring for evening campfires. While the park can accommodate moderate-sized RVs and trailers, the roads are narrow and the turns can be tight, making it most comfortable for those with smaller to mid-sized setups who are prepared for self-contained living.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Adventure seekers will find plenty to do within a short drive of the park. The Point Iroquois Lighthouse is a local landmark offering historical insight and panoramic views of the bay. Visitors can also head east to Sault Ste. Marie to witness the engineering marvel of the Soo Locks. On-site, popular activities include beachcombing for agates, swimming in the chilly lake waters, and spotting massive Great Lakes freighters as they navigate the shipping lanes in the distance.
Who This Park Is Best For
Bay View is ideal for boondockers and nature enthusiasts who prefer the sound of wind through the pines over the hum of an air conditioner. It is a perfect fit for travelers seeking solitude and simplicity without the crowds found at major commercial resorts. If your travel style involves self-sufficiency and a desire to wake up next to a Great Lake, this park provides the authentic, rugged experience that defines camping in northern Michigan.

Beautiful views at the beach, a short walk down, few people and lots of space, felt like we had the place to ourselves. Sunsets are spectacular. There are some biting flies and mosquitoes for sure so wear light colored clothing and bring your Deet spray. Towels are handy to wrap around your legs when they get vicious. The bathrooms are clean and well kept. Water pump works well.

Second time camping here. More bugs in June than our previous trip in August… still a beautiful place. Great hosts. Everything is clean. We hit a day in the high 80s while camping and the kids swam all day. Little breezy but it kept the bugs away. Definitely would recommend it.
