Hiawatha/Pete's Lake
Overview
Pete's Lake Campground offers a quintessential Northwoods experience within the Hiawatha National Forest. Located just south of Munising and Wetmore, this federal recreation site provides a serene escape for RVers who prefer a rustic and natural setting over a commercial resort. With 41 campsites tucked into the timber, it serves as an excellent basecamp for exploring the central Upper Peninsula while maintaining a peaceful, secluded atmosphere surrounded by dense hardwoods and pines.
Location & Surroundings
The park is situated on the northern shores of Pete's Lake, a 190-acre crystal-clear body of water. The surrounding landscape is defined by the vast, rolling terrain of the Hiawatha National Forest, offering a sense of deep immersion in the Michigan wilderness. Its location near the intersection of M-94 and FH-13 ensures that while you feel miles away from civilization, you remain within a short drive of the stunning vistas and rugged coastlines of Lake Superior.
Amenities & Park Features
As a National Forest campground, the focus here is on simplicity and nature. There are no electric hookups or water connections at the individual sites, so RVers should arrive prepared for a traditional dry camping experience. The park features paved spurs for easier leveling, vault toilets, and hand-pumped drinking water. Each site includes a fire ring and picnic table. A developed boat ramp provides easy access for kayaks and small motorized boats, while a sandy swimming beach and picnic area provide space for daytime relaxation.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to keep them busy, starting with the Bruno's Run Trail, a nine-mile multi-use loop for hiking and mountain biking that circles several lakes. A short 15-minute drive north leads to the world-renowned Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, where travelers can view towering sandstone cliffs and sea caves. Additionally, the Wetmore area is home to several stunning roadside attractions, including the beautiful Wagner Falls and the Munising Falls Visitor Center.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for self-contained RVers who value privacy and natural beauty over modern luxuries like Wi-Fi or sewer hookups. It is a perfect fit for those who enjoy paddling and fishing for perch and walleye in a quiet, undisturbed setting. If your travel style involves disconnecting from the grid to enjoy the sounds of the forest and bright starlit nights, Pete's Lake is a premier choice for your Michigan adventure.

Hello all. I was the camphost this summer at the beautiful Pete's lake campground in Wetmore Mi. I want to thank all of you beautiful people for coming and camping here. We enjoyed meeting so many of you. I know that there were some folks that may not have had such an enjoyable experience and I'd like to apologize. When folks came to us with an issue we always did our best to resolve it. However some folks didn't tell us until the next day when it was too late. We never minded anyone coming at night to let us know. Also we did have 2 days a week off so there may have been times when we were gone most or all of the day. I hope you all come back and enjoy this beautiful campground next year. We won't be here but another wonderful couple will be. Stay safe! B. Duwe

Beautiful campground on a lake. We just returned from our annual trip here and for the fourth year in a row, quite hours were not enforced whatsoever. We keep coming back in hopes it will be better as the campground itself is great, but campers partying until past 2am and generators running 24/7 ruin it.

Hosts where very nice! But the company in charge needs to do something with the water system because they don't seem to want to fix it and over half the time we couldn't get water. Had to go elsewhere to get water. They could also have a dump station put there! There is plenty of room to have one put in but no place to dump unless you drive way out of your way to find some place. They have it at a couple other places but nowhere around the area there! 😕 Other than that a great experience!

Would not recommend this campground. Camp hosts do not enforce the rules. Neighbor ran generator 24/7,camp host was directly across from this site. In my opinion, you camp to enjoy nature, generators need to be used when allowed. Young kids did repeated laps in golf carts, dogs barking, again no enforcement of any kind. Could be a nice campground if people cared enough to follow rules.

A favorite of my extended family's list of places to camp. So many fond memories. It was great to be back. Bugs are a real nuisance though, so be prepared. Also, U.P. weather is fickle. Again, be prepared.
