Hiawatha/Widewaters

Overview

Widewaters Campground, located within the expansive Hiawatha National Forest, offers a serene escape for RVers looking to immerse themselves in the Upper Peninsula’s natural beauty. Positioned along a scenic bend of the Indian River, this destination provides a classic rustic camping experience away from the noise of busy commercial corridors. It is managed by the U.S. Forest Service, ensuring the landscape remains preserved and the atmosphere stays tranquil. This park serves as an excellent basecamp for those who want to explore the heart of the forest while remaining within reach of Lake Superior.

Location & Surroundings

The campground sits approximately 12 miles south of Wetmore, Michigan, tucked deep within the Hiawatha National Forest. The surrounding terrain is characterized by lush hardwoods and towering pines, creating a secluded canopy for every campsite. The defining feature of the location is the Widewaters of the Indian River, where the water slows and broadens significantly. This unique geographic feature provides a mirror-like surface that reflects the vibrant Michigan sunsets and the dense forest greenery that hugs the shoreline.

Amenities & Park Features

As a National Forest site, the amenities at Widewaters focus on simplicity and a direct connection to nature. The park features well-spaced sites that offer plenty of privacy between neighbors and a quiet environment for relaxation.

  • Spacious wooded sites designed to accommodate various RV and trailer lengths.
  • Direct access to a paved boat launch for easy entry into the Indian River.
  • Essential facilities including vault toilets and hand-pumped water for a traditional experience.

Each site is equipped with a heavy-duty picnic table and a fire ring, perfect for evening campfires under a clear, dark sky and enjoying the local wilderness.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for many visitors is the proximity to the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, which is just a short drive to the north. Outdoor enthusiasts will also appreciate the Bruno’s Run Trail, a nine-mile multi-use loop perfect for hiking and mountain biking that winds through the surrounding lakes and valleys. The Indian River itself is a premier spot for canoeing and kayaking, offering miles of calm water for those looking to view local wildlife or fish for brook trout in a pristine wilderness setting.

Good customer service. I had to travel a long distance to pick up materials for a rush job we were working on and they stayed after hours to help me load, greatly appreciated.

Best campsite EVER! I love the privacy, the abundance of nature, the safe feeling it provides, and the cleanliness of the bathrooms. We have gone to this camp for two years now and it is our favorite spot. It's intimate but also has a community aspect to it. Great price too! It also has great nature paths to explore. Enjoy your visit.

We loved this small, neat, clean campground with flat sites that were very spacious. We didn't like the overhanging trees on the road coming into the campground. Unforgivable!
