Higley Flow

Overview

Higley Flow State Park offers a serene escape tucked into the picturesque foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. Situated along the winding Raquette River, this park provides a classic New York camping experience focused heavily on water activities and deep forest immersion. It remains a quiet, peaceful destination where the pace of life slows significantly, making it a favorite for those seeking to reconnect with nature away from the noise of large commercialized parks. The park is characterized by its lush greenery and the wide, gentle waters of the river flow.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the charming town of Colton, NY, the park is a hidden gem within the scenic St. Lawrence Valley. The landscape is defined by the flow, a wide and impressively calm section of the Raquette River created by a downstream dam. The surrounding terrain is heavily forested, featuring a mix of hardwoods and evergreens that provide a dense, private canopy for many of the campsites. Its strategic location near the northern boundary of the Adirondack Park provides easy access to some of the most rugged wilderness in the Northeast.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features over 100 individual campsites, including a selection of electric hookup sites specifically designed for modern RVs. While the overall vibe remains rustic and natural, guests have access to well-maintained facilities including hot showers, clean restrooms, and a convenient RV dump station. Recreational highlights include a guarded sandy swimming beach, an interpretive nature center with seasonal programs, and spacious picnic pavilions. For those traveling with watercraft, the dedicated boat launch allows for seamless access to the river's tranquil waters.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts can spend days kayaking and canoeing through the gentle currents or exploring the extensive network of hiking trails that meander through the woods. These trails are popular year-round, serving as prime spots for birdwatching in the summer and cross-country skiing in the winter. Fishing is a primary draw here, with the river known for healthy populations of smallmouth bass and northern pike. A short drive leads to the village of Potsdam, which offers local boutiques, university campus tours, and diverse dining options.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for families and solo travelers who prioritize a quiet, authentic outdoor atmosphere over the flashy amenities of a high-traffic resort. It is a perfect match for RVers who enjoy paddling and fishing and want a site that feels truly integrated into the forest. If you are looking for spacious sites, scenic river views, and a traditional camping experience in the heart of Northern New York, Higley Flow is a fantastic choice for your next travel itinerary.

Beautiful state park. We camped for the week and thoroughly enjoyed the peace and serenity. The only thing missing from the camping area is a dish washing station, but bathrooms and showers were clean and modern.

Really enjoyed Site 41 at Higley Flow State Park. Roads throughout are in decent shape and we enjoyed lots of bike riding. Took a loop around the "block" into Colton and South Colton and enjoyed a meal and ice cream from The Red Pinecone. Office was staffed from morning till night. Park guided activities were available for kids and adults with flyers posted on the bathroom houses. The bathroom facilities seem to be brand new with large, private unisex rooms. Dump facilities were clean and easy to use. We were disappointed to find that bikes are not allowed on any of the trails, but we found plenty of opportunities inside and outside the park boundaries. We had spotty Verizon service, but were able to use our Starlink (with obstructions) for Internet/streaming by placing it out at the very edge of the water. Fellow campers and pets were friendly and enjoyable. No complaints!

Our waterfront campsite was level and had a manageable grassy slope from which to launch our kayaks. The beach/playground area is very nice. Clean and modern bathrooms/shower facilities. Good paddling on Higley Flow and the Raquette River. The Loop roads to the campsites are narrow, so you might have to maneuver your camping rig pretty carefully.

This is a GREAT PLACE. Very wooded and not easy to get here, lots of country backroads. GPS is a good thing! Sites are spacious. Shower houses and bathrooms are separate buildings. Both are outstanding and very clean (though corners could use some attention). Lots of camp sites are up an incline w/flat parking at top, so if you need a site that is totally flat ground, call and get advice from staff. Picture attached, but it doesn't really show the incline. For extra safety, we engaged the car's parking break and chalked rear tires.

So today I went skiing on the higley flow cross country ski trails. It's 3 days after 20 in of snow and everything is groomed beautifully except for trails that are not meant for grooming. There are some Backcountry trails that are just gorgeous. The volunteers do a wonderful job of taking care of things.
