Holmes County
Overview
Holmes County State Park offers a quiet escape into the rolling hills of central Mississippi. Established in the 1930s, this park covers over 400 acres of lush hardwood forests and features two scenic lakes. It provides a rustic atmosphere where the sounds of nature replace the hum of city life, making it a hidden gem for travelers seeking a genuine outdoor experience in a serene, wooded environment that feels miles away from the modern world.
Location & Surroundings
Conveniently located just a few miles from Interstate 55 near Durant, MS, the park feels surprisingly secluded and private. The landscape is characterized by its high-relief hills and deep gullies, which are unique to this central portion of the state. The surrounding area is primarily rural and peaceful, offering visitors a transition from the highway into a dense canopy of loblolly pines and ancient oaks that surround the park’s two freshwater fishing lakes.
Amenities & Park Features
The park caters to RV travelers with 28 developed camping sites equipped with water and electrical hookups. A central bathhouse provides hot showers and clean restroom facilities, while a convenient dump station is available for guest use. For recreation, the park features English Lake and Odom Lake, both of which are stocked for fishing. Families will appreciate the on-site playground and the picnic areas with tables and grills that are scattered throughout the grounds for guest enjoyment.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw here, with fishing and boating topping the list of popular activities. Anglers often find success catching bass, bream, and catfish from the shore or small watercraft. The park also maintains a network of nature trails that wind through the forest, perfect for bird watching and photography. For a unique touch, the park features a historic skating rink and sits within easy driving distance of the scenic Natchez Trace Parkway for afternoon day trips.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts and families who prefer a quiet, traditional camping experience over a crowded resort. It is a fantastic choice for I-55 travelers looking for a scenic overnight stop that offers more than just a typical asphalt parking space. If you enjoy waking up to the sound of forest birds and spending your afternoons by the water, Holmes County State Park provides the relaxing environment you are looking for.

Called for an overnight stay. Was told sites were first come first served. Assured sites would be level, not true, n many to choose from. Most have concrete slabs going uphill or downhill. Arrived at 3:30 to find no site we tried was level for our 36 ft MH. Setup on #5, the best we could, only to find the electric was not working. Guy in charge tried to fix power n finally said not enough power working, so settled on 30amp while there. Worst state park so far.

Not very impressive. Unkempt. Wanted to primitive camp which was listed as possibility but no directions on where to set do this once you got there. There was no caretaker there and no number to call and ask questions. It was peaceful though! We stayed one night. The bathroom facilities are quite run down but there was hot water for showers.
