Homochitto/Clear Springs

Overview

Nestled within the dense canopy of the Homochitto National Forest, Clear Springs Recreation Area offers a tranquil escape for those seeking the raw beauty of southwest Mississippi. This destination is built around a spring-fed lake and is widely regarded for its lush forested terrain and peaceful atmosphere. Unlike high-traffic commercial resorts, this park emphasizes a deep connection with nature, providing a quiet basecamp for outdoor enthusiasts exploring the Meadville area.

Location & Surroundings

Located just outside of Meadville, MS, the park is defined by the rolling hills and pine-hardwood forests of the Homochitto River basin. The environment is secluded, offering a break from the noise of interstate travel. Visitors are surrounded by towering loblolly pines and dogwoods, creating a cooling shade even during the humid Mississippi summers. The centerpiece is the spring-fed lake, which serves as a scenic focal point for the entire recreation area.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground provides developed sites that accommodate RVs with electric and water hookups. While the setting is rustic, the park ensures a comfortable stay with the following features:

  • Access to hot showers and flush toilets in the central bathhouses.
  • Individual sites equipped with picnic tables and fire rings.
  • Proximity to spring-fed waters and shaded picnic areas.

While there is no Wi-Fi available at the sites, the lack of connectivity is part of the charm, encouraging guests to enjoy the natural sounds of the forest.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

This location is a premier destination for mountain bikers, featuring the renowned Clear Springs Trail System with loops catering to various skill levels. Hikers can explore the Mill Branch and Richardson Hollow trails, which offer excellent bird-watching opportunities. The lake is perfect for fishing and non-motorized boating, providing a glassy surface for morning paddles. For a change of pace, the small-town charm of Meadville is just a short drive away for local supplies.

Who This Park Is Best For

Clear Springs is an ideal fit for mountain bikers and hikers who want immediate access to some of the state’s best trail networks. It appeals to RVers who prefer seclusion and natural beauty over resort-style amenities like swimming pools or clubhouses. The campground roads are in need of a little maintenance, along with the paved trail. Bathrooms are very clean and well-maintained. Larger trailers should stick to the loop on the right as the sites are more level and trailer friendly. Trailer sites on the left Road are a little tight for larger trailers. We had a 21 footer and were able to manage between the trees. Water and Electric with a senior lifetime pass was 13.00 per night. Campground was not crowded on a Saturday night. Forest service, please keep this campground open!

Amazing campground. I’ve been coming here since I was a kid and it never disappoints. We had a blast this weekend. If you come, bring bikes!

The campground is in desperate need of some TLC but we still had a great time. I have read through so many reviews and looked at so many pics & not 1 single picture or mention of the creek even from people who claim they use to come here as kids. Does no one know the creeks existed except me and my family. I preferred the creek over the lake even when I was a child in the 80s. Anyhow it’s a bit of a climb down and then back up but man it’s worth it. I brought my kids and husband yesterday & they had a great time. We do know next time we definitely need a rope ladder or something so the climb down and back up from the creek.

Scenic area and campgrounds. Peaceful and quiet. Westbound on 84, GMap gives you a four mile dirt road. Pass it by and proceed W on 84 to the Clear Springs Rd and sign. Turn S onto paved road. Easy. Campsites on upper loop seem easier to back a trailer or small RV into; more level. Our second time there and will stay again in future.

Clean spacious well developed park. Nice trail that loops around the lake. Dog friendly! Flushable bathrooms.
