Hoosier/Tipsaw Rec Area

Overview

Tipsaw Lake Recreation Area is a premier destination located within the sprawling Hoosier National Forest, offering a tranquil and scenic escape for those who appreciate the natural beauty of Southern Indiana. This recreation area is managed by the U.S. Forest Service and is widely recognized for its well-maintained campsites and the 131-acre lake that serves as its centerpiece. It offers an authentic forest experience that balances the ruggedness of the wild with the accessibility required for a relaxing RV getaway.

Location & Surroundings

Located just a short drive from St. Croix, Indiana, the park is nestled among dense hardwood forests and the rolling hills characteristic of the region. The area surrounding the park is sparsely populated, ensuring that the only sounds you hear are the wind in the trees and the local wildlife. The proximity to the Ohio River Valley and the lush topography makes the drive into the park a scenic highlight, especially during the peak fall foliage season when the canopy turns into a sea of gold and crimson.

Amenities & Park Features

The park caters to RVers by offering several loops with electric hookups, allowing for a more comfortable stay in the woods. Each site is thoughtfully spaced to provide a sense of privacy and includes a picnic table and fire ring for evening campfires. Key features available to guests include:

  • Access to modern shower facilities and clean flush toilets.
  • A large sandy swimming beach with a designated beach house.
  • A paved boat ramp suitable for kayaks and small fishing boats.
  • An on-site dump station for convenient waste management.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

There is no shortage of activity for those who love the outdoors. The Tipsaw Lake Trail is a popular choice, offering a multi-use path for hikers and mountain bikers that circles the entire lake. For those interested in regional history and family fun, the park is located within driving distance of Santa Claus, Indiana, home to the famous Holiday World theme park. Additionally, the nearby Tell City area offers unique local dining and shopping along the banks of the Ohio River, providing a nice contrast to the quiet of the woods.

Who This Park Is Best For

This recreation area is an ideal choice for traditional campers and RVers who prioritize natural landscapes and quiet evenings over resort-style amenities. It is specifically well-suited for anglers and hikers who want immediate access to trails and water right from their campsite. Families looking to disconnect from technology and reconnect with nature will find the park’s peaceful atmosphere and lack of city lights a refreshing change of pace, making it a top pick for a soul-soothing forest retreat.

We had a quick stopover here their final weekend of the season. We were the only campers on our loop aside from the camp host. The kids loved the space and the nature. Super easy to back our big rig into. We will absolutely be back.

Amazing lake with beach. Seems historic because they don't make this kind of stone work anymore. Campground and boat ramp too.

Big fan. Feels remote but close to everything. Primitive camping loop (Dogwood) is well maintained, clean, accessible, and decent cell coverage. Favorite spot is 30. Camp hosts go out of their way to make you feel welcome and ensure a good stay.
