Hopeville Pond

Overview

Hopeville Pond State Park offers a peaceful retreat within the Quinebaug and Shetucket Rivers Valley National Heritage Corridor. Set on the shores of a scenic pond, the park is known for its heavily wooded campsites and quiet atmosphere. Originally a site for several thriving woolen mills, the area has transitioned into a prime destination for those seeking a rustic connection with nature in eastern Connecticut.

Location & Surroundings

Nestled in the town of Griswold, Connecticut, the park is surrounded by the lush greenery of the Pachaug State Forest region. The local geography is defined by the winding Pachaug River, which feeds into the pond itself. Travelers will find a landscape dominated by towering pines and hardwoods, creating a secluded environment that feels worlds away from the busy metropolitan corridors of southern New England.

Amenities & Park Features

While the park focuses on a primitive experience, it provides essential facilities for self-contained RVers. Visitors have access to a central dump station and seasonal water filling points to support their stay. The park features a designated swimming beach, multiple picnic shelters, and boat launch facilities for kayaks and canoes. On-land recreation includes sports courts and well-maintained shower facilities located conveniently near the camping loops.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Fishing is a primary draw, with the pond stocked regularly to provide excellent opportunities for anglers. Hikers can explore miles of trails that weave through the forest and along the shoreline. Just a short drive away, visitors can explore Pachaug State Forest for more extensive trail systems. For a change of pace, the Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods casinos are located within a 20-minute drive, offering world-class dining and entertainment.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for nature lovers and dry campers who prefer the sounds of the forest over modern distractions. Because there are no on-site hookups, it is best suited for RVers with solar or battery power looking for an unplugged experience. It is a fantastic choice for families and outdoor enthusiasts who want easy access to the water and a quiet, historic atmosphere.

Cool campground, but a little loud when its full. Not very secluded sites, more of a family camping vibe with full bathrooms and showers, and some generators running. Thankfully everyone was quiet after 9pm. Otherwise the sites were okay, not much privacy but clean and flat. The pond is nice.

I went Kayakingout on the pond today. It's a great place for someone who's not used to being out on the water. The water is calm, very little current. It's beautiful here as well. There are plenty of picnic tables and grills for a gathering. I will be returning

We enjoyed our experience here. Checked in on a Friday in July and checked out on Sunday. Stayed in a standard non-electric campsite on F-street. Sites in this loop are further away from the pond and shower/washing station, but have trees/vegetation between sites offering more privacy than the sites near the pond. I also found F-street to be quieter. Pros: Big and level campsites with a picnic table and campfire ring and lots of shade. Friendly staff and a nice park office where you can get ice. Access to showers, dish washing station, garbage bins. And you are at most 5 to 15 minutes away from stores. Nice nature trails and proximity to pachaug state forest (we did the mt misery and rhododendron sanctuary trails…excellent). Small cons: I would say that enforcement of the 10pm quiet hours rule is a bit lax. The beach near the shower/washing station is small and the other hopeville pond beach a bit north of it is only a little bigger. This is fine for little kids I suppose. A shower head in the men’s bathroom was broken. Overall, would recommend this place for novice and experience campers alike.

Awesome place to bring my dog; really nice facilities, big wide trails, and the scenery is, of course, just gorgeous. Pack a rod, the fishing looks good, too
