Horseshoe Lake
Overview
Horseshoe Lake State Park offers a serene escape into one of Illinois’ most unique natural landscapes. Spanning over 2,900 acres, this park centers around a large oxbow lake that was once a vital resource for ancient civilizations. It serves as a tranquil retreat for RVers looking to immerse themselves in nature while remaining remarkably close to major urban centers. The park is well-regarded for its diverse ecosystems and historic significance, providing a peaceful atmosphere for those traveling through the Metro East area.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in Granite City, Illinois, the park sits just east of the Mississippi River. The surrounding terrain is characterized by lush wetlands and fertile floodplains, making it a vibrant environment during the spring and summer months. Its position within the Mississippi Flyway makes it a critical stop for migratory birds, offering visitors a front-row seat to seasonal migrations. Travelers will find the park easy to access via major highways, providing a quiet buffer between the industrial corridors of the region and the river valley.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground at Horseshoe Lake provides a classic state park experience for the modern traveler. It features level campsites suitable for various RV sizes, though it is primarily geared toward those seeking a more traditional outdoor stay. On-site facilities include electric hookups at designated sites, sanitary dump stations, and seasonal shower houses. The park also provides multiple boat ramps for easy lake access, several miles of hiking trails, and picnic areas equipped with grills for an afternoon gathering by the water.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the excellent fishing and birdwatching opportunities available right at the lake’s edge. For those looking to explore the wider region, the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site is just a short drive away, offering a fascinating glimpse into ancient Mississippian culture. Additionally, the vibrant city of St. Louis is less than 15 minutes across the river, allowing visitors to explore the Gateway Arch or enjoy world-class dining before returning to the quiet of their campsite.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for nature photographers and birders who want to catch glimpses of rare waterfowl and snowy egrets in their natural habitat. It is a fantastic choice for weekend warriors from the local metro area or cross-country travelers seeking a quiet, natural alternative to crowded private RV resorts. If you prefer a slow pace, expansive water views, and a simple, functional setup over high-end luxury amenities, this state park is a perfect fit for your travel style.

Fantastic spot for birding! There’s a road leading to the central island where we saw thousands of Red-winged Blackbirds there.

Beautiful area! Great for the family to get away from everything and have a picnic, play on the playgrounds, or fish.

We had such a great time yesterday at Horseshoe Lake! Happened upon it by chance, with the makings of a picnic. We had the whole day use area to ourselves, and it was a gorgeous day. A very well-maintained park, well kept up and clean

It’s a place to get outside and get some steps in, but it’s pretty average and not worth going too far out of the way for. Hiking trails had some drainage issues.
