Horseshoe Lake State Fish & Wildlife Area

Overview

Horseshoe Lake State Fish & Wildlife Area offers a unique landscape that feels more like a southern bayou than a Midwestern park. Located in the heart of Alexander County, this 10,200-acre site is famous for its shallow, horseshoe-shaped lake filled with ancient bald cypress and tupelo trees. RVers visiting this destination will find a serene environment characterized by Spanish-moss-like aesthetics and rich biodiversity. It serves as a vital stopover for migratory birds, making it a premiere destination for those who want to immerse themselves in a tranquil natural setting while enjoying the comforts of their rig.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Olive Branch, IL, the park is nestled in the southern tip of the state, just a short distance from the Mississippi River. The surrounding landscape is dominated by fertile bottomlands and heavy timber, providing a secluded atmosphere far from the noise of major metropolitan areas. Travelers will appreciate the scenic rural drives that lead to the park, where the flat plains give way to the dramatic, water-logged forests that define the region’s distinct geographical character.

Amenities & Park Features

For RV travelers, the park provides dedicated camping areas designed to accommodate various needs. There are Class A campsites equipped with electricity and access to a modern shower building, as well as Class B sites for those requiring fewer utilities. A sanitary dump station is available on-site to ensure a convenient stay for self-contained units. While the park maintains a rustic charm, the presence of well-maintained boat ramps allows visitors to easily launch small watercraft, provided they adhere to the 10-horsepower motor limit designed to preserve the lake's quietude.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw at Horseshoe Lake is the exceptional bird watching and photography opportunities, especially during the winter months when thousands of Canada geese and bald eagles frequent the area. Anglers visit regularly to test their luck catching crappie, bass, and bluegill among the cypress knees. Beyond the park boundaries, visitors can explore the southern reaches of the Shawnee National Forest or visit the historic confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers at Fort Defiance State Park in nearby Cairo.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for nature enthusiasts and photographers who prioritize scenery and wildlife over resort-style amenities. It is a perfect fit for RVers looking for a quiet, rustic retreat where they can wake up to the sounds of nature. Because of its specialized habitat, it is particularly recommended for birders and those who enjoy slow-paced paddling. If you prefer a peaceful environment with a unique ecological flair, Horseshoe Lake is a hidden gem that offers a true escape from the fast lane.

April 2025 The location, lake and camp spots are 5 stars. The toilets and outhouses are 2 stars. FCFS, with drop box to pay. Very weak cell signal. Spots are well spaced, and views of the cypress trees in the lake are beautiful. It is quiet with lots of wild life sounds. Mature trees abound. In my mid week visit I was the only camper. The vault toilets are in disrepair, and not recently pumped. The bathroom is rough. No dump station here, but there is one at the east side camp. The dock at the boat ramp at camp is fine, and the boat ramp looks serviceable. There are a number of other docks that are falling apart.
