Humboldt Redwoods/Albee Creek

Overview

Albee Creek Campground offers a serene escape within the heart of Humboldt Redwoods State Park. Located approximately five miles west of the Avenue of the Giants, this park sits on the site of an old homestead, providing a unique mix of open meadows and towering redwood groves. It is a seasonal destination that provides a more secluded experience than other roadside campgrounds, allowing travelers to truly immerse themselves in the quiet beauty of Northern California.

Location & Surroundings

Situated along the scenic Mattole Road, the campground is surrounded by some of the world's most impressive old-growth forests. The setting is distinct for its large prairie areas where black-tailed deer and wild turkeys are frequently spotted at dawn and dusk. Unlike the more congested areas near the highway, the surroundings here feel deeply integrated with the Bull Creek watershed, offering a quiet, natural soundtrack and clear night skies perfect for stargazing.

Amenities & Park Features

As a rustic state park destination, Albee Creek features sites best suited for smaller RVs and camper vans. There are no hookups available, so travelers should arrive prepared for dry camping. However, the park provides essential comforts including flush toilets and coin-operated showers. Each site is equipped with a fire ring, picnic table, and a bear-proof food locker to ensure a safe and organized stay amidst the wilderness.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find immediate access to the Bull Creek Trail System, which connects to miles of hiking and mountain biking paths. A short drive leads back to the iconic Avenue of the Giants, where visitors can explore the Founders Grove or the Big Tree Area. For a scenic day trip, the historic Victorian village of Ferndale offers charming architecture and local shops just a drive away via the winding and beautiful Mattole Road.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for RVers who prioritize a quiet, nature-focused experience over resort-style amenities. It is a favorite for families looking to disconnect and hikers wanting to be steps away from redwood trailheads. Because of the narrow and winding access road, it is best suited for those with smaller rigs who are comfortable navigating mountainous terrain to reach a peaceful forest sanctuary away from the hustle of the main tourist corridors.

Gorgeous spot. Very chirpy, helpful, welcoming camp host. There's a prairie / meadow with apple trees that the black bears come to (we didn't see any though, but saw plenty of deer) We had a lovely spot (020) on the very edge. A few noisy guests but you can't win them all.

Absolutely amazing campground. We walked in and were able to get spot #1, we loved being close to the meadow, trees, creek, bathrooms, and amazing hiking trails! Our favorite spot to walk to was the Big Tree Area. Staff was so kind and cheerful, I'd love to come back

My girlfriend and I loved our two campgrounds. We stayed in 16 the first night and 21 the second. Restroom facilities were basic but nice. Site 16 had more shade from the trees but a slightly slanted ground. Site 21 had flat ground but slightly more bugs since you’re closer to the meadows. Beautiful campsite overall!

Forewarning- especially to those driving in at night!!! Don't make the same mistake that I did. It may be obvious to some but apparently not for me. Once you get on Mattole Road off the 101, DO NOT FOLLOW GOOGLE MAPS DIRECTION. Stay on the road for just over 5 miles, look out for the Albee campground sign and the road into camp will be on your right. Google maps will lead you to turn onto a thin dirt road (even has a small post that states Albee Creek Campground). This is incorrect and you've gone too far. I'll be happy if it helps one other person. Great campsite though.

Beautiful and peaceful. Smaller campsite so less people around. The trails, meadow, and creeks are gorgeous. Highly recommend. I had site #10 and it was well shaded by Redwood trees and fairly private.
