Humboldt-Toiyabe/Crags

Overview

Crags Campground offers a classic High Sierra experience tucked within the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. Located near the stunning Twin Lakes, this destination provides a rugged escape for RVers who value natural beauty over modern luxuries. The park is characterized by its towering lodgepole pines and the proximity to Robinson Creek, making it a peaceful retreat for those exploring the Eastern Sierra. It is a seasonal destination, typically welcoming visitors from late spring through early autumn when the mountain air is crisp and the scenery is at its most vibrant.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just south of Bridgeport, CA, the campground sits at an elevation of approximately 7,000 feet. The landscape is dominated by the jagged peaks of the Sawtooth Ridge, providing a dramatic backdrop for every campsite. The surrounding forest is dense and offers plenty of shade, while the proximity to the Twin Lakes basin ensures that water-based recreation is always nearby. The area serves as a gateway to the Hoover Wilderness, offering a true sense of isolation while remaining accessible from Highway 395.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional Forest Service site, Crags focuses on providing a rustic, authentic outdoor experience. You will find vault toilets and seasonal potable water available throughout the grounds. Each site is equipped with a heavy-duty fire ring and a picnic table for outdoor dining. While there are no hookups or dump stations on-site, the campground can accommodate RVs and trailers, though maneuvering larger rigs requires careful attention due to the narrow, paved loop roads and the natural layout of the forest floor.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities near this mountain haven. The Twin Lakes are famous for trophy trout fishing and offer boat rentals for a day on the water. Hikers can access the Barney Lake Trail or explore the vast wilderness trails that lead deep into the mountains. For a touch of history, Bodie State Historic Park, a well-preserved ghost town, is a scenic drive away, offering a fascinating look at California’s gold-mining past and rugged high-desert heritage.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for self-contained RVers who enjoy dry camping and want to be fully immersed in a wilderness setting. It is a perfect fit for trout anglers, nature photographers, and hikers looking for a basecamp near the jagged Sierra Nevada peaks. If you prefer the rustling of pine needles and the sound of a rushing creek to the amenities of a paved resort, this authentic mountain gem will provide the peaceful High Sierra experience you are looking for.

Not many sites have shade; but lots of nice flat camping pads, very clean and well maintained. Very quiet with great night time views. Very close to the Twin Lakes without the crowded conditions and uneven site pads of theLower Twin Lakes campground

Not much shade on any campsites but the creek was fun and refreshing. We used this as basecamp to visit Bodie and it was only a 45 minute drive.

Beautiful RV campsite below rugged mountains and Lower Twin Lakes. Less trees than the campsite next to the river, but No bugs. RV sites have no hookups, no shower's at the site, however coin shower's are 4 minutes away. Twin Lakes Resort has boats and a great general store nearby. Water was only 7' below normal, fishing only. Upper lake was full.

Very nice campground with shade near a creek. The bathrooms are the best! They were always clean, indoor with flushing toilets, a sink, and lights that turn on automatically.
