Humboldt-Toiyabe/Paha Campground

Overview

Paha Campground offers a quintessential High Sierra camping experience within the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. Nestled at an elevation of approximately 7,000 feet, this US Forest Service facility provides a serene mountain atmosphere along the banks of Robinson Creek. It serves as a rugged yet inviting home base for those looking to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with the towering pines and dramatic granite peaks of California’s eastern slopes.

Location & Surroundings

Located just southwest of Bridgeport, CA, the campground is situated in the scenic Twin Lakes area. The landscape is defined by dense lodgepole and Jeffrey pines, providing natural shade and a sense of seclusion for campers. Robinson Creek flows directly through the site, offering a soothing soundtrack and easy water access. To the west, the jagged peaks of the Hoover Wilderness provide a dramatic backdrop that defines the local skyline.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional forest service site, Paha Campground focuses on a rustic experience rather than modern luxuries. There are no hookups available, making it ideal for self-contained RVers or those comfortable with dry camping. Each site is equipped with a picnic table, a fire ring, and a mandatory bear-resistant food locker to ensure safety. Visitors have access to vault toilets and seasonal potable water, though many travelers prefer to arrive with full freshwater tanks.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for this region. Anglers frequent the area for exceptional trout fishing in Robinson Creek and the nearby Twin Lakes. For hikers, the nearby trailheads lead into the high-alpine basins and pristine glacial lakes of the Sierra Nevada. History enthusiasts can take a short drive to Bodie State Historic Park, a well-preserved ghost town that offers a fascinating glimpse into the region gold-mining heritage.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is best suited for travelers who prioritize natural beauty and outdoor adventure over resort-style amenities. It is an excellent choice for anglers, photographers, and families looking for a traditional camping trip. While the sites can accommodate various rig sizes, it is particularly popular with camper vans and smaller trailers that can easily navigate the wooded terrain. If you seek a quiet retreat under a canopy of stars, this is your destination.

We really enjoyed our time here! The campground is great—there’s a river flowing near the restrooms, and the sound of the water brings a sense of calm and peace. We even spotted some deer! One of the best things is that each campsite has its own water tap, which is super convenient. We went with a 2-year-old and a 5-year-old, and they had a blast! It’s a family-friendly spot that’s perfect for kids too. Make sure to arrive early to enjoy the full camping experience! We stayed at site 002, which was sunny and didn’t have much shade. There are other sites with plenty of shade, some located right beside the river—definitely worth checking out. Just a heads-up: after 8 PM, the campground stops selling firewood, so it’s better to buy it earlier or from a nearby store. Also, there’s no cell phone signal here, which makes it a perfect escape to disconnect and relax.

Stayed in the YURT.... I've been looking at it for years.. Finally decided to leave my tents and RV at home and just drive up and throw all my gear inside and relax. It worked out great.

Nice campsite which had a table, bear vault, and fire pit. Many sites were along the river. There was a restroom building, and walking trails right from the campground. Friendly camp host was readily available. Would recommend this campground.
