Humboldt-Toiyabe/Trumbull Lake

Overview

Trumbull Lake Campground offers a quintessential alpine experience within the vast Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. Located at a high elevation near Bridgeport, California, this destination serves as a tranquil base for exploring the eastern Sierra Nevada. The atmosphere is quiet and rustic, providing a stark contrast to more developed resort parks. Travelers come here to disconnect and immerse themselves in the rugged beauty of the High Sierra while enjoying a traditional camping environment.

Location & Surroundings

Tucked away in the Virginia Lakes Basin, the campground is surrounded by towering lodgepole pines and dramatic granite peaks. At an elevation of approximately 9,500 feet, the air remains crisp even in mid-summer, and the scenery is spectacular. The drive from Highway 395 takes you through winding mountain roads into a secluded pocket of nature. The proximity to Trumbull Lake means water views and mountain breezes are part of the daily experience for every visitor.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a traditional forest service campground, meaning it is designed for a rustic experience. There are no hookups for RVs, so visitors should arrive prepared for dry camping. Essential facilities provided include:

  • Vault toilets maintained for cleanliness.
  • Access to potable water via hand pumps or spigots.
  • Heavy-duty bear-resistant food lockers at every site.
  • Fire rings and picnic tables for outdoor dining.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for this area. Anglers frequently visit to cast lines for trout in the nearby Virginia Lakes chain. For those who prefer trekking, the Virginia Lakes Trailhead provides direct access to the stunning Hoover Wilderness. Beyond the immediate forest, the eerie remains of Bodie State Historic Park, a well-preserved ghost town, is a short drive away, offering a unique glimpse into California's gold mining history and high-desert landscapes.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for self-contained RVers and van lifers who prioritize natural scenery over modern conveniences. It is a haven for hikers, photographers, and those seeking a true mountain escape far from city lights. Because of the narrow access roads and specific site dimensions, it is best suited for small to mid-sized rigs rather than massive motorhomes requiring full utility connections and level concrete pads.

Great location with lots of hiking to lakes. The sites are decent sized but in general, the sites near the water are smaller. Lots of fishing. The resort near by has a store/restaurant with decent food (veggie options) and $5 showers. Mono lake is close for a sunrise walk. Camp host was wonderful, restrooms were clean and the campground was nicely kept.

We spent 4 nights here and had a wonderful time! Very peaceful and plenty of wildlife to view. The fish were not biting, but still a lot of fun. We also visited the Travertine Hot Springs and made a day trip up to Bridgeport, great time all the way around.

Decent campground, but be prepared for the high altitude and the mosquito's. If you are not use to being at higher altitudes camping at over 9,500ft can present some challenges and give you headaches. We went in late June 2020 and the mosquito's were out in force, I was told that in July and August they taper off. Campground was clean and relatively quiet. There have pit toilets and running water but no showers, and there isn't any option for showers in Bridgeport either. Make sure to use the bear boxes as there are bears in the area.

My husband and I LOVE this campground! -I actually went camping here as a little kid so I have such great memories. The freshest and cleanest air you could ask for! And the stars at night are SO gorgeous from here! The campground is clean, has bathrooms and dumpsters as well as bear boxes.
