Humbug Mountain

Overview

Humbug Mountain State Park offers a unique coastal camping experience tucked away in a deep, forested canyon. Sheltered by one of the highest headlands on the Oregon Coast, the park provides a wind-protected microclimate that is often warmer and calmer than the exposed beaches nearby. It is a favorite for those seeking a tranquil retreat amidst ancient trees and rugged shoreline vistas, offering a peaceful alternative to the more commercialized coastal stops.

Location & Surroundings

Located just six miles south of Port Orford on Highway 101, the park sits at the base of the massive green peak of Humbug Mountain. The campground is nestled between steep hills, providing a sense of seclusion and deep immersion in nature. A short walking trail leads from the camp, passing under the highway bridge to reveal a wide, sandy beach perfect for exploring the wild and dramatic Curry County coastline.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground is well-equipped for modern travelers, featuring 39 sites with electrical and water hookups that accommodate a variety of RV sizes. Guests have access to well-maintained restrooms featuring hot showers and flush toilets, ensuring a comfortable stay in the wilderness. While individual sites lack sewer hookups, an accessible dump station is located nearby. The sites are framed by a lush canopy of maple and fir trees, providing excellent privacy and shade.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for active travelers is the Humbug Mountain Trail, a 5.5-mile loop that climbs to the mountain's summit for sweeping views of the Pacific. Down at the shore, the area is famous for world-class windsurfing and beachcombing. Just a short drive north, visitors can explore the historic Port Orford Lifeboat Station or visit Battle Rock Park to watch local fishing boats navigate the unique pierless harbor.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for nature enthusiasts and hikers who prefer a quiet, rustic atmosphere over a bustling resort. It is a fantastic choice for families looking to explore tide pools or solo travelers seeking a peaceful stopover while driving the Oregon Coast Highway. If you value direct access to hiking and the beach without the typical coastal winds, this park provides the perfect balance of forest and sea.

I was so surprised by this campground! It is very well kept! The camp sites are a little smaller than I'm used to in a state park. Not much privacy either... You have to have your camp set up perfectly to have that. There is road noise, but if you're like me and love white noise at night, it's not a huge problem. There is also a creek behind some of the campsites and you can hear it at night. It's so lovely. I recommend getting a site on the first loop (1-27) there is way less people and closer to the bathrooms/showers. Gorgeous views and easy walk to the beach. I was at the upper loop, so prepare for a long walk down there but it really had everything you need: mountains and the beach? Oh yes!

This was my favorite campground so far on my trip. The little wer part is perfect for children to ride bikes and play. Nice walk to the beach. Easy and difficult hiking in the area.

What a wonderful park we really enjoyed it. You do need to book on-line but at the camp host site there is wifi that you can sign into and make your reservation. The sites were very shady so we chose an electric site. This is a beautiful campground. We walked under the bridge to the beach for sunset, loved it.

Absolutely beautiful, even the drive here was breathtaking. !!! The kids enjoyed the open field area in middle of camp, it's very large enough for all of the kids. Large enough to play baseball, throw frisbees, throw footballs. Kids can safely and freely ride bikes around this campground. The warmest it gets is in the low 70s. It's, that's a fairly cold bring lots and lots of warm clothes. Especially for the kids at night. If you are wanting a quiet place, this certainly is not it. The only things that I can say I as an adult did not enjoy,.... the campsites are on top of each other, there's not very much space. Between the person next to you, it will feel like you are camping with them. You're so close. There are a few spots that are not like that. Not many. Lots of people come in all night all hours and start setting up camp and the noise of that in the middle of the night. It can be frustrating. However, overall, it was nice.

Absolutely amazing spot to visit. The campground was very well kept, restrooms and showers were sparkling clean and the hosts were all very friendly and helpful! The trail is a must do activity with stunning views.
