Huron-Manistee/Kneff Lake

Overview

Kneff Lake Campground offers a tranquil escape within the vast acreage of the Huron-Manistee National Forests. Centered around a pristine 12-acre spring-fed lake, this destination provides a classic Michigan camping experience defined by towering pines and quiet mornings. It is a strictly rustic camping destination, favoring a deep connection with the natural environment over modern developments. Travelers seeking a respite from the noise of daily life will find this hidden gem near Grayling to be a refreshing change of pace for their next outdoor adventure.

Location & Surroundings

Located just east of Grayling, MI, the park is situated in a region renowned for its high-quality water systems and dense woodlands. The surroundings are characterized by the Au Sable River valley, which draws outdoor enthusiasts from across the Midwest. The campground sits in a topographical bowl, providing a sense of seclusion and protection from the elements. This location serves as an ideal basecamp for exploring the northern Lower Peninsula, where the landscape is dominated by thick stands of Jack Pine and Red Pine forests.

Amenities & Park Features

As a primitive facility, Kneff Lake prioritizes the basics of outdoor living. The park features several key elements for a comfortable stay:

  • The facility provides clean vault toilets that are maintained regularly for guest comfort.
  • A traditional hand pump is available to supply potable water for cooking and cleaning needs.
  • Every campsite is outfitted with heavy-duty picnic tables and sturdy fire rings for outdoor meals.

One of the standout features is the designated swimming area and a small boat launch restricted to non-motorized craft, ensuring the lake remains quiet and undisturbed throughout the day.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure lies just beyond the forest boundaries, starting with the legendary Au Sable River, famous for its world-class trout fishing and paddling opportunities. History buffs and nature lovers should visit Hartwick Pines State Park to see one of the last remaining stands of old-growth white pine in Michigan. For those who enjoy hiking, the nearby Mason Tract offers miles of scenic trails through protected wilderness. The town of Grayling also provides convenient access to local breweries and small-town shops for stocking up on essential supplies.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for self-contained RVers and boondockers who appreciate a minimalist approach to camping. Because the sites are designed for a more intimate feel, it is best suited for camper vans, truck campers, or smaller travel trailers. It is a perfect match for nature photographers and birdwatchers who want to wake up to the sounds of the forest rather than the hum of a neighbor's air conditioner. If your travel style favors starlit skies and the crackle of a campfire over resort-style amenities, this is your destination.

I love this campground but after the last time I was there I won't go back. I was literally followed into camp every time I left by the camp host with petty things I was doing wrong. I've NEVER had problems anywhere I camp. This was over the top to a point it made my trip miserable.

This is usually our quiet place to go to. Our hosts Rick and Kay were exceptional this year. Love the lake and peace and quiet!
