The Sand Lake Recreation Area offers a tranquil retreat deep within the heart of the Huron-Manistee National Forests. Situated on the shores of a pristine lake, this campground provides a quintessential Michigan forest experience. Located near Wellston, Michigan, the recreation area is surrounded by thousands of acres of protected forest land. The park centers around the shores of Sand Lake, a beautiful no-wake body of water that ensures a quiet atmosphere. Visitors will find themselves beneath a dense canopy of hardwoods and pines, offering plenty of shade and a cool breeze during the summer months. The scenic rolling hills of the Manistee region provide a perfect backdrop for a morning walk or an evening campfire.

Amenities & Park Features

As a National Forest site, the amenities focus on enhancing the natural environment rather than providing commercial luxury. The park features:

  • Designated swimming beaches with clear, shallow water perfect for families.
  • Spacious, level sites that accommodate many RV types.
  • A convenient boat launch facility for those looking to explore by kayak or canoe.

While hookups are not available, the campground offers basic necessities such as vault toilets and hand-pumped drinking water.

The Big Manistee River is world-famous for salmon and steelhead fishing, located only minutes away from your campsite. For those who enjoy hiking, the nearby North Country National Scenic Trail offers miles of exploration through diverse terrain. If you are looking for a day trip, the stunning dunes of Lake Michigan are within reach, providing a dramatic contrast to the inland forest scenery.

Beautiful lake, we got to do some fishing, swimming and sunning here. Dogs are allowed, it wasn't busy when we were up. It has a small picnic area and bathrooms. This is definitely a lake I'd make the trip back to enjoy again. Just enough parking to keep it cozy, this is a great spot to enjoy the day.

Super cheap and super quiet. Most sites are surrounded by trees and spaced a fair distance from adjacent sites. They take reservations and first come, first serve.

It was a nice stay. Showers are free, roads are paved, bathrooms don't have soap or papertowel. Dollar General and Gas station not far from camp.

Been coming here since I was a kid in the early 90s. Ran by "American Leisure and Recreation." Good people. CLEANED 3x daily: Flush toilets and showers. Wood sold at houses nearby. Small village of Dublin and Irons for Food and Camping supplies, or a nice meal away from camp!
