Illini
Overview
Illini State Park offers a serene getaway along the majestic Illinois River in Marseilles. This 510-acre park is steeped in natural beauty and history, having been a popular recreational spot for generations. Unlike commercial resorts, this state-managed destination provides a rustic riverside experience that highlights the local landscape and the powerful flow of the river. It is a place where travelers come to trade city noise for the sounds of water and wind through the trees.
Location & Surroundings
The park is perched on the south bank of the Illinois River, providing stunning views of the Marseilles Lock and Dam. Its topography features rolling hills and limestone bluffs that offer distinct vantage points of the river traffic below. The surrounding area is largely agricultural and wooded, ensuring that visitors feel disconnected from the hustle of Chicago, which is located only about ninety minutes away. This scenic riverfront setting makes it a standout choice for those traveling through north-central Illinois.
Amenities & Park Features
Camping at the park is split into several areas, with many sites offering the necessary utilities for a comfortable stay. Facilities include modern shower buildings and sanitary dump stations to accommodate longer stays. For those who enjoy outdoor gatherings, the park features:
- Class A campsites with electrical hookups and access to modern showers.
- Dedicated sanitary dump stations for convenient RV maintenance.
- Spacious picnic areas featuring historic stone shelters built by the CCC.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty of activities, from fishing for walleye and catfish to boating on the river. The park contains several miles of hiking trails that wind through the woods and along the riverbanks. For a day trip, the world-famous Starved Rock State Park is just a short drive west, offering dramatic canyons and waterfalls. Additionally, the historic downtown Marseilles provides a quaint look at local Illinois life with small shops and local dining options just minutes from the park entrance.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for nature lovers and birdwatchers who enjoy spotting bald eagles over the water during the colder months. It serves as a perfect base camp for families who prefer a quiet, traditional camping experience over a high-activity resort. Because of its proximity to major highways, it is also a convenient scenic stopover for cross-country RVers looking for a peaceful night’s rest in a beautiful, natural environment.

It's a beautiful park. Nice hiking trails and many fishing spots alongside the Illinois River. The campground area is really nice but the pit toilets, the running toilets and faucets need to be updated and serviced. The faucets don't shut off most of the time, therefore thousands of gallons of water are being wasted every day. The lights in the woman's bathroom are burnt out excefor one, so bring your flashlight at night. Otherwise, the place is beautiful specially in the fall!

Quiet State Park with beautiful views of the Illinois River. The area by Mallard Bay was especially scenic with many river access points and a hiking trail through the woods. There was hardly anyone else there during my visit. There's plenty of parking and the restrooms and the park itself were very clean and well taken care of.

Nice park with view of the river. Some spots are a little too close but overall nice and quiet.

We visited Illini SP for Spring Break again in 2025. The Forest Restoration work at the park is extensive. Much of the invasive Honeysuckle and Buckthorn have been cut down throughout the park. My family loves Illini SP. We come every year and camp in the Great Falls campground. We love the park as it is so beautiful, and we love the nearby communities of Marseilles, Ottawa, and Utica. Close to home, but what a great getaway to get closer to nature.

It is a great quiet campground. Only different thing is you're totally on your own with check in. There were no employees to help. That's definitely not a game breaker but without a campsite map it was challenging to find our site. Now that we know the layout we'll definitely go back.
