Overview
The Illinois State Fairgrounds Campground offers a practical and spacious home base for travelers visiting the historic capital city of Springfield. Situated on the north end of the city, this facility provides year-round accommodations for RVers looking for a reliable, well-maintained stop. While the park is most famous for hosting the annual state fair, it serves as a quiet and functional hub for most of the year. The sprawling grounds offer a sense of scale and history, reflecting the deep agricultural roots of the region while providing a centrally located landing spot for modern travelers.
Location & Surroundings
The campground is conveniently positioned within the 366-acre historic fairgrounds, providing a unique atmosphere compared to traditional private parks. Located just off Interstate 55 and Route 66, it is incredibly easy to access for those navigating through the heart of the Midwest. The surrounding neighborhood is primarily a mix of residential areas and fairground facilities, ensuring that essential services like grocery stores, repair shops, and fuel stations are just a short drive away. Its location makes it an ideal jumping-off point for exploring both the urban center and the rural beauty of Sangamon County.
Amenities & Park Features
Visitors will find a variety of site configurations, including full hookup sites equipped with water, sewer, and both 30 and 50-amp electrical service. The campground is designed to accommodate a wide range of rigs, offering many level gravel sites that simplify the setup process for large motorhomes and fifth wheels. On-site facilities include basic restrooms and shower houses, which are kept clean for guest use. While the environment is straightforward and focused on utility, the presence of security patrols and well-lit pathways provides an added layer of comfort for guests during their stay.

Springfield is a treasure trove for history enthusiasts, and staying here puts you only minutes away from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. You can also pay your respects at Lincoln’s Tomb or walk through the Lincoln Home National Historic Site to see where the family lived for seventeen years. For those interested in unique architecture, the Dana-Thomas House, a Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece, is a must-see local highlight. Additionally, the fairgrounds themselves frequently host horse shows, auctions, and automotive events, often providing entertainment within walking distance of your campsite.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is a perfect fit for history buffs and families who want to immerse themselves in the legacy of the 16th President without a long commute. Other commenters have pretty well described this first come, first served CG. I would only add that even though there are 300 sites, many are extremely unlevel and only suitable for short class B vans or tents. The grass sites are 30A and water with dump station. Paved sites are 30/50A with water and pretty tight. Some have sewer, some don't. If arriving after hours, pick a site, then call security to check you in and pay. Best route in - GPS had us taking some roundabout way. I would recommend coming in on I-55 and getting off at Illinois 29 (E. Sangamon Ave.) and head west. it's a straight shot to Gate 11 to enter the fairgrounds. Look for the white, oval campground sign.

We enjoyed our stay here. It wasn't too expensive...$30 for electric and water, but we didn't hook up to the water. Very close proximity to Abraham Lincoln historical sites. Man working was very nice and informative.

A good place to stop for the night. Lots of parking. Inexpensive. All sites have water and electricity. A few have sewer hookups. Very close to one of the best Abe Lincoln museums in the country and also to Lincoln's tomb if you'd like something to do for a while.

Very laid back. Not a lot of BS rules. Everyone staying here was very respectful. No load noises, dogs were all quiet. Our neighbors were great. And only $20 a night could not beat it. They have full hook ups at some spots with 50amp. We choose a spot in the grass by a big old oak tree. There was no sewer and only 30 amp. But the dump station it on the way out. Would definitely recommend
