Indian Mountain

Overview

Indian Mountain State Park in Jellico, Tennessee, offers a unique blend of natural beauty and history. Originally a reclaimed strip mine, the park has been carefully transformed into a lush 200-acre retreat nestled within the shadows of the Cumberland Mountains. The transformation from an industrial site to a tranquil public park provides an inspiring backdrop for your Tennessee adventure. It serves as a peaceful atmosphere for travelers looking to escape the noise of the highway while enjoying well-maintained facilities and a serene lakeside setting.

Location & Surroundings

Located just off Interstate 75 near the Kentucky border, the park serves as a gateway to the rugged Cumberland Mountains. The surrounding landscape features rolling hills and dense forests, creating a picturesque environment for any stay. This balance of mountain seclusion and highway accessibility makes it a favorite for regional travelers. Its proximity to Jellico’s downtown area ensures that essential supplies and local charm are never far away, making it a convenient yet scenic stop for those traveling through East Tennessee.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features 49 paved sites, each equipped with water and electricity hookups supporting both 30 and 50-amp service. The facilities are designed to be accessible and comfortable for modern travelers. Park features include:

  • Two fishing lakes stocked with bluegill, catfish, and crappie.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the campsite, visitors can explore the Indian Mountain Trail, which offers views of the park’s successful transformation into a wildlife habitat. Anglers will appreciate the easy access to the water, while birdwatchers can spot various native species along the shoreline. For day trips, the park is a short drive from the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, providing a deeper look into the region's pioneering history. The nearby Norris Lake also offers expanded boating and water recreation opportunities for those seeking more adventure.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal fit for nature-loving families and retirees seeking a quiet, accessible basecamp in a historical setting. We absolutely love this campground! It's a great place to bike, hike, fish, rent a paddleboat, play disc golf or basketball, and SO much more! The purple here a friendly and helpful. There's always a Ranger around for all kinds of information if needed. It's really clean and kept nice. A couple sites are a little hard to get into if it's crowded, but overall the spacing is good. Some sites have multiple picnic tables to choose. All sites are concrete with a good amount of grass to stretch out on. There are several playground areas available. Most of the areas are pretty well visible from the campground. We've camped here twice and headed back again!

In most ways this is a 5 star campground. Pros: Best for families, with a playground and open space for tossing a ball or frisbee. Plentiful wood for sale at a reasonable price. Water, electric, and dump station at each individual site. Level cement pad at each site with patio add-on. Lovely walking trail around a small lake with fishing and paddle boats. The men's restroom had plentiful hot water and dry floors. Cons: Women's restroom had only lukewarm water in the showers and was constantly flooded. It's not best for retired folks looking for a restful, quiet camping experience.

Beautiful park, we only stayed one night but we would definitely go back. Sites are easy to back into, but the lots are not very big.

Beautiful park. Just stayed overnight but wish we were there longer. Electric sewer and water. Lake. Creeks. Clean. Just beautiful and so reasonable in price.

Beautiful campgrounds! Most of these trails are perfect for biking and rollerskating because they're paved. We took a hike around the Ballard lake trail, which is one of the unpaved trails; still a very easy and clear trail. We had a lovely relaxing time!
