Indiana State Fairgrounds

Overview

The Indiana State Fairgrounds RV Park offers a unique urban camping experience right in the heart of the state capitol. This year-round facility serves as a practical and reliable basecamp for visitors attending large-scale events on the fairgrounds or travelers looking to explore the vibrant city of Indianapolis. While it favors utility over a resort-like atmosphere, it provides a safe and secure environment for travelers who value convenience and proximity to metropolitan amenities. Its position within a historic venue makes it a staple for the regional RV community.

Location & Surroundings

Situated on the northeast side of the city, the park is positioned within the expansive 250-acre Indiana State Fairgrounds & Event Center. The surrounding area is a mix of residential neighborhoods and commercial zones, offering easy access to major thoroughfares and city transit. Being located on such a large site, the park feels surprisingly separated from the immediate bustle of city streets while remaining just minutes away from the Indianapolis cultural districts and the downtown core. It is an island of convenience in a bustling urban landscape.

Amenities & Park Features

The facility provides essential services designed for modern RVers, including full hookup sites equipped with both 30 and 50-amp electrical service. Most sites are level and paved, which is a significant advantage for those traveling in heavy units. On-site benefits include 24-hour security patrols and a dedicated dump station for added convenience. While the setting is more functional than scenic, the park ensures a clean stay with access to potable water and sewer connections. The paved surfaces also ensure that the park remains usable and clean regardless of the weather conditions.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Guests are perfectly positioned to visit the Children's Museum of Indianapolis, which is widely considered one of the best in the country and is located just a short drive away. Outdoor enthusiasts can easily access the Monon Trail, a popular rails-to-trails path perfect for biking and walking that connects several vibrant neighborhoods. For art and nature lovers, the nearby Newfields campus offers stunning gardens and galleries. Additionally, sports fans will appreciate the quick commute to Lucas Oil Stadium or Gainbridge Fieldhouse for professional games and concerts.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal choice for event-goers and urban explorers who want to be in the center of the action. It is specifically suited for travelers attending equestrian shows, trade fairs, or the iconic Indiana State Fair. Because of its level, paved surfaces, it is also an excellent choice for big-rig owners who need a reliable stopover with easy maneuverability. It appeals most to those who prioritize location, safety, and accessibility over a traditional wooded campground experience, making it a premier choice for city-centric travel.

We had our 98th national FFA conference in Indiana, and some of us went to the rodeo at the fairground, and some of us went to ice skating, which was amazing. The popcorn is really good at the ice rink. The prices are really reasonable. Also I like the Ag commodity data information on the bathroom mirror.

Had a fun time on the last day the fair was open this year. I didn't realize until this year i could get alcoholic drinks! Shower my i.d. one time and got a bracelet so I didn't have to show it again. You could buy as many as you wanted although I only had went in twice. They also have wheelchairs to rent for 25$ for the whole day which is nice because my elderly mother can't walk that far for very long. We enjoy shopping in the tents and getting out the food. My mom got an apple dumpling and ice cream she loved it. I found cheese curds which I was really suprised by never expected to get them at a fair. They were very good but they were 17$ for a cup, which was about a large size of curds I'd say from anywhere else. They had wood carvings which were pretty cool and very cute. We also got bobble heads made of ourselves for free from state farms tent. Which was awesome! I would definitely go to the fair again. Also parking is 10$ but it wasn't too far from the gate and we came later in the day. Also had to have my purse checked. I will definitely be returning and I recommend you try it as well ❤️

The fair grounds hold lots of events. Obviously first and foremost is the state fair. But they also hold some other events too like the Oddities and Curiosities showcase and a drive through Christmas light show. I can't say I've ever seen the grandstands used. Maybe it's for some of the concerts held there... But all of the events are well staffed and crowds are handled well. The fair grounds are nice, clean and well maintained. My only negative is that having to walk a circle around a giant parking lot can get a little boring and hot. The area has a lot of asphalt. Some more trees around the area or teardown of unused concrete/asphalt could go a long way. They do have a tractor shuttle during fair days to help alleviate some of the walking though.

Finally went to the fair after eleven years!! Why we decided to go on a hot Saturday I have no clue why. The food items that they had at the fair this year were very delicious. Unfortunately the prices did go up on some of the food items. Playing the games is a waste of time. They're all hustlers. It doesn't matter what duck you pick up in the duck game. They're all small prizes. You may be wondering, well how does she know this? It's because I picked up fifteen ducks and they were all small. This is a great place to bring your family. Don't spend money on games. Spend money on food and the experience at the different entertainment things they have and the different buildings.

The Indiana State Fair was very crowded by 10am on Saturday. But there was still plenty of parking and crowds moved swiftly at exhibits and standing in line for other things. There were plenty of staff there in case of a question or problem which might arise. Unfortunately, the prices seem to be a bit high for the average family to go to. Parking and admission for 2 adults was $44, plus a lunch for 2 which added another $25. Gulp down a $30 bucket lemonade with that and you are already at $100 before even getting started. After some cheap blow up rifles, a stuffed animal that had bad stitching, and 3 gold fish later we managed to skip out without losing more than $100 in a few short games. Without self-control or a little restraint, a person can be well over the $200 which our family spent within an hour of being at the fair. It is an enjoyment to see the animals and pioneer village but outside of that, I wouldn't suggest taking a van full of children unless they are already fed and it is bracelet ride day because if you do otherwise, withdraw $400-700 immediately, with no regrets. Cause that is what it will take to feed and please the group you will have with you.
