Interlakes Campground

Overview

Interlakes Campground offers a rugged and immersive experience within the beautiful heart of Peter Lougheed Provincial Park. Located between the Upper and Lower Kananaskis Lakes, this destination is defined by its stunning alpine scenery and dense sub-alpine forest. It is a strictly unserviced campground, making it a prime choice for RVers who enjoy dry camping and a quiet, natural atmosphere away from the bustle of modern resorts. The park operates seasonally, welcoming those who appreciate a true wilderness setting.

Location & Surroundings

Situated near the Kananaskis Village region of Alberta, the park is surrounded by the towering peaks of the Canadian Rockies. The sites are tucked into a thick canopy of spruce and fir trees, providing excellent privacy and a true sense of backcountry seclusion. The proximity to Lower Kananaskis Lake ensures that cool breezes and mountain views are never far away, while the high elevation offers crisp air and clear night skies throughout the summer season.

Amenities & Park Features

As a rustic facility, the amenities at Interlakes focus on the essentials for self-contained RVs. The park provides vault toilets and hand pump water stations, though travelers should arrive with full fresh water tanks and empty waste tanks. Each site features a heavy-duty fire pit and a picnic table for outdoor dining. Featured park amenities include:

  • Access to a paved boat launch for easy water entry.
  • On-site firewood sales for evening campfires.
  • Spacious gravel pads designed for mid-sized RVs.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find endless opportunities for adventure right at their doorstep. The Upper Kananaskis Lake Trail provides a scenic loop for hikers of various skill levels, while the lakes themselves are popular for kayaking and trout fishing. For a touch of comfort, the nearby Kananaskis Village offers dining, golf, and spa services. Wildlife viewing is a major draw here, with frequent sightings of grizzly bears, moose, and elk in the meadows.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for self-sufficient RVers who prioritize natural beauty over modern luxury. It is a perfect fit for families looking to disconnect from technology and outdoor photographers seeking the perfect mountain reflection. If you enjoy boondocking-style camping with the security of a designated site, Interlakes provides the ultimate basecamp for exploring the wilder side of Alberta's mountain parks. Love this campground!!! Clean and quiet, despite lots of people coming in looking for available sites. The host was amazing! Had a great time chatting with her during our week long stay!

Great spots but very difficult to get in. Very busy campground.

An amazing experience! Campground hosts are fantastic, definitely have a passion for nature and wildlife, with all the bears and other larger animals up there they need to be. Regular patrols with both conservation officers and bear technicians ensure everyone and every site is bear aware (food and coolers locked up in cars, no garbage left out) and safe. Checkout is at 2, first come first serve, and good chances to find a spot, just need to be early and patient. Campground is clean and washrooms done once a day. Lake is beautiful and this year was high so great chance to go relax down on the shore And if you see the hosts, take a minute or two to chat about which bears are around. Super knowledgeable and fascinating! A great way to experience one of Alberta’s Crown Jewels!

Incredible campground in terms of location! Half the sites are along the shore of Lower lake and the other half are across the road but are bigger for larger RVs. Pit toilets are stinky but kept clean. Manager drives up and down the road all day long which seemed a bit excessive. Needless to say, the campground is well monitored and any issue will be taken care of promptly. There are very strictly kept bear attractants rules so be warned. You cannot leave the gravel of your site unless all food is put away. Even if you’re just walking down to the shore which is 20m away. Kayaks or zodiacs are allowed to be left on the shore. Ppl seem to leave between 10am-1pm so come earlier in the day.

Amazing campsite. Managers are fair and firm. Views are unsurpassed. Only downside? LOTS OF DOG POOP by the lakeside. Wish campers would be more respectful, and the managers put up some signs (and/or complimentary poop bags).
