Inyo/Big Pine Creek
Overview
Tucked away in the eastern Sierra Nevada, Inyo's Big Pine Creek Campground offers an immersive alpine experience at an elevation of approximately 7,700 feet. This isn't your typical roadside stop; it is a rugged mountain destination designed for those who want to wake up to the sounds of rushing water and crisp mountain air. The campground serves as a primary basecamp for exploring the high-country wilderness, providing a sense of seclusion and raw natural beauty that defines the Inyo National Forest experience.
Location & Surroundings
Located 11 miles west of the town of Big Pine, California, the campground is nestled in a deep canyon carved by Big Pine Creek. The surrounding landscape is dominated by jagged granite summits and steep canyon walls. Because it is positioned at the end of Glacier Lodge Road, the area feels remote and untouched. Visitors are surrounded by Jeffrey pines and aspens, which provide dappled shade and vibrant colors for those visiting during the autumn months.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a rustic facility prioritizing the outdoor environment over modern luxuries. The park features paved spurs and essential amenities like vault toilets, bear-resistant food lockers, and picnic tables. While you will not find electric or water hookups here, the access to seasonal potable water makes dry camping manageable. Site sizes vary, making it essential for RVers to check dimensions ahead of time, as most spots are better suited for smaller rigs and camper vans.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The crown jewel of the area is the trail to the Palisade Glacier, the southernmost glacier in the United States. Hikers can also trek to the stunning turquoise waters of the North Fork of Big Pine Creek. For those who prefer a slower pace, creekside fishing for rainbow and brown trout is a popular pastime right from the campground. A short drive back toward the valley floor allows visitors to explore the unique geology of the Owens Valley.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for adventure-seeking RVers who prefer high-altitude hiking and nature photography over resort-style amenities. If you travel in a smaller rig and enjoy being disconnected from the digital world, you will find peace here. It is perfect for travelers who use their RV as a mobile basecamp for backcountry exploration. If your travel style involves star-filled nights and direct access to world-class wilderness trails, this is the destination for you.

A very nice campground. No running water but there is a creek that runs through so if needed you can filter water. There is a store on site and they sell fire wood. Easy to find and locate your spot. Bathrooms are clean and don't smell.

Beautiful, quiet campground, with lots of shade. Clean vault toilets, no running water. Look at the campground map and get a site next to the creek 👌.

Beautiful campground surrounded by snow-capped peaks and tall trees with lots of shade. Goid privacy between most sites. Excellent hiking from camp and close to the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest for terrific views and more hikes.

A great campground, clean and nicely laid out. Very good spots for vehicles with tents, and several very suitable for small trailers or RVs. Notably, when you enter the driveway you are actually entering a separate RV trailer campground. Drive through that, heading back East, and you will find a Park Service sign indicating you've come to the correct part and correct campground.

Beautiful, special place next to a river. Hiking access to some of the best views around with the Big Pine Lakes and the glacier. Non smelly pit toilets and I think the store is open now. Sleeping at 7700' MSL. Store is open. Update: no bears have been seen yet this year at the campground per host. showers are $7 at lodge - you bring the supplies. New photo.
