Inyo/Glass Creek

Overview

Glass Creek Campground offers a quintessential High Sierra camping experience nestled within the expansive Inyo National Forest. Located just north of the scenic Mammoth Lakes area, this destination provides a rustic escape for travelers who prioritize natural beauty over traditional resort-style luxuries. It is a primitive-style campground where the scent of towering Jeffrey pines and the unique sight of volcanic landscapes create a peaceful atmosphere for those looking to disconnect and enjoy the Great Outdoors in a tranquil forest setting.

Location & Surroundings

Situated off Highway 395 near the famous June Lake Loop, the park is surrounded by the dramatic, jagged peaks of the Eastern Sierra. The terrain is visually striking, featuring volcanic pumice soil and massive evergreens that provide ample shade. Its high elevation provides cool summer temperatures, making it a perfect base for exploring the diverse ecosystems of Mono County. The proximity to Glass Creek allows for gentle water sounds and easy access to lush alpine meadows located just a short walk from the campsites.

Amenities & Park Features

This is primarily a dry-camping facility, meaning guests should arrive prepared with full water tanks and charged batteries. The park features vault toilets and regular trash collection but offers no utility hookups or potable water on-site. Each individual site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a heavy-duty fire ring for evening gatherings under the stars. The paved access roads make it accessible for many types of rigs, though the interior sites retain a rugged, forested feel that emphasizes the boondocking-lite experience many Sierra travelers crave.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activity, as the park serves as a gateway to the June Lake Loop’s pristine waters. Fishing, boating, and hiking are popular at nearby Gull and Silver Lakes, where the views are world-class. For those with Off-Highway Vehicles (OHV), the surrounding forest service roads offer miles of exploration through unique geological formations. Additionally, the stunning vistas of Mono Lake and the recreational hubs of Mammoth Mountain are just a short drive away, offering year-round adventures.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal choice for self-contained RVers who enjoy a boondocking environment with the added structure of defined, paved campsites. It is particularly popular with OHV enthusiasts and mountain bikers who want direct access to backcountry trails without hauling their gear long distances. If you value solitude and starry nights over swimming pools and Wi-Fi, this rugged forest retreat will perfectly suit your adventurous travel style during your next journey through the Eastern Sierra.

This is the place for free camping! No water but there is a stream, fire pit plus bear cage for your food! The camp administration is terrific; they even have me a jump!! Five stars easily!!!

What a nice FREE campsite! I couldn't believe it was free. There are bathrooms, picnic table, firepit with griddle and a place to store firewood. Great spot to stay at near June Lake/Mammoth. Can't wait to come back again! Also, the campground host was super friendly as well. Definitely feels safe.

Really liked Glass Creek, the campsites are nice with tables, pits and Bear boxes. Great place to walk and enjoy nature. Pet friendly as well. Small creek nearby. I will return.
