Inyo/Grays Meadow Lower

Overview

Lower Grays Meadow Campground offers a classic Eastern Sierra experience under the shadow of dramatic mountain peaks. Situated at an elevation of roughly 6,000 feet in the Inyo National Forest, this site provides a rugged base for those seeking a genuine connection with nature. It is a seasonal destination known for its stunning mountain vistas and the soothing sounds of Independence Creek flowing nearby. Unlike developed luxury resorts, this park focuses on the raw beauty of the Owens Valley and the surrounding wilderness, offering a peaceful atmosphere for outdoor enthusiasts.

Location & Surroundings

Located just six miles west of Independence, California, the campground sits along the scenic Onion Valley Road. The surroundings transition beautifully from high-desert scrub to towering Jeffrey pines and cottonwoods that provide patches of welcome shade. The dramatic granite walls of the Sierra Nevada rise sharply to the west, creating a backdrop that is particularly striking during the golden hour. Travelers should be prepared for the high-altitude environment, which features crisp mountain air, clear night skies, and a direct link to the wilderness.

Amenities & Park Features

As a rustic forest service facility, Lower Grays Meadow caters primarily to self-contained travelers. The campground offers potable water and vault toilets but does not provide electricity, water, or sewer hookups. Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring with a grill for evening campfires. While the park can accommodate smaller RVs and trailers, the site lengths are often better suited for units under 30 feet. The presence of bear-resistant food lockers is a mandatory feature at every site, ensuring safety for both visitors and the local black bear population.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities within reach of the campground. Anglers frequently visit to cast lines for trout in Independence Creek, which is regularly stocked throughout the season. Just up the road, the Onion Valley trailhead serves as a major gateway to the John Muir Wilderness and the spectacular Kearsarge Pass. For a historical perspective, the Manzanar National Historic Site is a short drive away, offering a poignant look at local history. Additionally, the Eastern California Museum in nearby Independence provides fascinating insights into the region's geological and cultural heritage.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for RVers who prioritize scenery and solitude over modern resort luxuries. It is a perfect fit for hikers, photographers, and fishermen who want to stay as close as possible to Sierra trailheads and streams. Because there are no hookups, it is best suited for travelers comfortable with dry camping and those maneuvering smaller rigs or camper vans. If you are looking for a quiet mountain retreat that serves as a launchpad for high-altitude adventure, Lower Grays Meadow delivers an authentic California mountain experience.

An amazing place and if you’re lucky enough there’s plenty of sites with the creek right behind you where you can take a dip in the river

Beautiful campgrounds water is running a little slow this time in July but other than that, it’s a nice place to take the wife and kids

Sometimes it is not just clean bathrooms that can make a stay at a campground enjoyable. After chatting with Brianna and her husband, I realized how lucky I was to have finally met truly friendly and helpful camp hosts. I’m spoiled now tho and want to clone them to take with me to every campground I’m going to next! Fun, good people who clearly love what they do. They take great care of the campsite too, as other commenters have mentioned. Do yourself a favor and go say hi to them at the camp host site when you are there. I highly recommend them and the campground.

I’ve been coming here with my family for the past few years and it’s always a great memorable experience. Restrooms are always clean and satisfactory. Hiking trails are close by but you have to drive up the mountain.

Note there's a lower and upper Grays Meadows campgrounds. Upper has a bit more tree coverage and larger pools of creek water. There was no upper camp host. The west section of upper has a very tight narrow turn around so walk in first if you have an over 20ft trailer or RV. The east side has better access for even 30ft+ units. A step up from independence creek CG but still nothing compared to the BIG trees and alpine stream campgrounds up the mountain near Whitney Portal.
