Inyo/Iris Meadow
Overview
Tucked away in the stunning Rock Creek Canyon of the Inyo National Forest, Iris Meadow offers a serene escape into the High Sierra. This seasonal campground provides a classic mountain camping experience where the air is crisp and the scenery is dominated by towering pines and granite peaks. It is a place where the pace slows down, allowing visitors to reconnect with nature in one of California's most cherished alpine environments during the warmer months.
Location & Surroundings
Located at an elevation of approximately 8,600 feet, this park is situated along the scenic Rock Creek Road, roughly halfway between Bishop and Mammoth Lakes. The dramatic alpine landscape features lush meadows that often fill with wild irises during the early summer season. Surrounded by the rugged peaks of the Sierra Nevada, the campground provides immediate access to the crystal-clear waters of Rock Creek, which flows gently through the canyon floor and provides a soothing backdrop for campers.
Amenities & Park Features
As a forest service facility, the amenities focus on providing a rugged, authentic stay rather than modern luxuries. The park offers spacious bear-resistant food lockers at every site, which are essential for safety in this active wildlife corridor. While there are no electric or water hookups available, guests have access to potable water spigots and well-maintained vault toilets throughout the loops. Most sites are well-shaded by lodgepole pines, providing a cool retreat even during the brightest summer afternoons.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities within a short distance of their campsite. Just a few miles up the road lies Rock Creek Lake, a premier destination for trout fishing and lakeside picnicking. For hikers, the Little Lakes Valley trailhead is easily accessible from here, offering a world-class trekking experience past a chain of stunning alpine lakes. If you need supplies or a hot meal, the historic Tom's Place is located just down the canyon, offering a convenient touch of civilization.
Who This Park Is Best For
Iris Meadow is ideally suited for self-contained RVers and van lifers who prioritize natural beauty and tranquility over resort-style amenities. Because of the winding canyon roads and specific site dimensions, it is best for those traveling in small to mid-sized trailers or campers. It serves as a perfect paradise for nature photographers and hikers looking for a quiet, high-altitude basecamp to explore the Eastern Sierra wilderness while avoiding the busier crowds of nearby resort towns.

Beautiful Fall colors late September/early October. Not too busy this time of year. Lots of Aspen around the meadow.

Campground was closed due to Winter storm damage. I fished Rock Creek through this Campground and it looks great. This is primitive camping - no hook ups for RV's, but the scenery and access to Rock Creek and Rock Creek Lake make up for it.

We were there just a short time. So could only enjoy the view and the river flows!

Campgroud is nice and right next to river, but the host was very passive aggressive. He threaten to call the police if we didn't move our tent away from the creek. He cited some rule about needing to be a hundred ft away from the creek. This was impossible because our entire site was within 100 ft. I think he didn't like us and wanted his fishing spot back. Too much drama. If you don't want people to camp there put up a sign. Stay away from this place and their random rule enforcement.

The campground was beautiful. There's a wonderful Creek that runs through it and the fall colors were amazing in October.
