Inyo/Lake George

Overview

Lake George Campground offers a quintessential high-altitude camping experience within the Inyo National Forest. Situated in the heart of the Mammoth Lakes Basin, this destination is renowned for its stunning alpine scenery and direct access to one of the region's most picturesque lakes. As a US Forest Service facility, it provides a rustic escape where the focus remains on natural beauty rather than resort-style luxuries. Visitors are treated to crisp mountain air and a tranquil environment surrounded by towering lodgepole pines and granite peaks.

Location & Surroundings

Perched at an elevation of approximately 9,000 feet, the campground is located at the end of Lake George Road in Mammoth Lakes, CA. The landscape is dominated by the dramatic granite face of Crystal Crag, which reflects beautifully in the lake's clear waters. This high-sierra setting provides a sense of deep wilderness, yet it remains conveniently accessible via paved roads. The surrounding terrain is a mix of dense forest and rugged slopes, making it one of the most scenic mountain basins in California.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a traditional mountain campground designed for those who enjoy dry camping. While there are no hookups available, the facility features paved roads and parking spurs suitable for smaller RVs and trailers. Each site is equipped with a picnic table, a fire ring, and a bear-proof food locker, which is mandatory for guest safety in this active wildlife area. On-site facilities include flush toilets and seasonal potable water, though travelers should arrive prepared for a self-sufficient, off-grid stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is Lake George itself, which is a premier destination for trout fishing and non-motorized boating. Hikers will find the trailhead for the Crystal Lake Trail nearby, providing a rewarding climb with panoramic views of the Lakes Basin. For those seeking more adventure, the Mammoth Crest Trail offers access to the high backcountry wilderness. Additionally, the Mammoth Lakes Basin trolley provides seasonal transportation to other nearby lakes and trailheads, allowing you to explore without moving your camp setup.

Who This Park Is Best For

Lake George is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize scenery and trail access over modern amenities. It is best suited for travelers with smaller camper vans or compact trailers who are comfortable without electricity or sewer connections. If you are looking for a peaceful basecamp to fish, hike, and disconnect under the stars, this campground provides the perfect high-sierra atmosphere for a traditional mountain retreat away from the crowds of larger commercial parks.

Lake George could honestly be called Crystal Lake! Crystal Clear water, underneath blue skies in July in summer...is the definition of paradise. I was a bit warm from hiking but I sure was not after taking a dip in here. Very relaxing, I recommend dipping your toes in the water. It is snowmelt so it is cold. Overall, nice family oriented environment. Folks were fishing (or "attempting to fish, i.e., waiting), haha, so I can't speak to this spot as a fishing hole because I don't know much about it in that regard. Likely other lakes nearby are far more known for fishing (such as June Lake). There were also folks on the opposite side of the lake jumping off of a rocky outcropping. Looked like fun but wasn't feeling that adventurous. Overall worth a stop here!

Clear water, beautiful scenery, not too crowded around the lake itself but the parking lot fills up quick as this is also the trailhead for Crystal Lake. Plenty of other smaller hikes available around the lake though. Dog and kid friendly although it can be quite windy and exposed to the elements so protect your littles. Several people go out on the lake itself using all types of inflatables but just as many spend the day fishing from the shore. Our favorite lake in the area!

Incredible lake for fishin' and just chillin' on the shoreline. Killer cliff jumping on the far side of the lake. Nice trail that circles the water too. Parking can be a challenge though. Come early...stay late!

This lake is so beautiful. There is a small way of surrounding it and have different perspectives of the lake and the mountains on the other side. Best times are in spring (Snow) and in fall (nice colors).

Very clean and great view, but very windy and cold on the lake side.
