Inyo/New Shady Rest

Overview

Inyo/New Shady Rest offers a quintessential High Sierra camping experience nestled within a dense forest of Jeffrey Pines. Located at an elevation of nearly 8,000 feet, this campground provides a cool, shaded retreat from the summer heat. Unlike many remote forest camps, it strikes a balance between rugged nature and modern accessibility, making it one of the most popular spots in the Inyo National Forest. The air is crisp, and the atmosphere is serene, defined by the scent of pine needles and the occasional chatter of local wildlife.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated at the entrance to the town of Mammoth Lakes, CA, providing an ideal basecamp for exploring the Eastern Sierra. While you are surrounded by towering trees, you are only minutes away from local grocery stores, breweries, and restaurants. The scenic paved paths that connect the campground to the town center allow for easy biking and walking. This unique positioning ensures that visitors can enjoy a deep-woods feel without sacrificing the convenience of nearby urban services.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a traditional dry-camping facility, meaning there are no hookups available at the individual sites. However, travelers will find paved parking pads, picnic tables, and fire rings at each location. The park is equipped with flush toilets and drinking water stations throughout the loops. Because this is active bear country, every site includes a heavy-duty bear locker for food storage. A dump station is conveniently located near the entrance, ensuring that self-contained RVers can manage their waste easily during their stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure is never far away when staying at New Shady Rest. Guests can easily access the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area for summer mountain biking or scenic gondola rides. The nearby Devils Postpile National Monument and Rainbow Falls are must-see natural wonders just a short drive or shuttle ride away. For those who enjoy water activities, the June Lake Loop and the Mammoth Lakes Basin offer world-class trout fishing and kayaking opportunities against a backdrop of dramatic granite peaks.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for self-contained RVers who appreciate a rustic environment over a manicured resort. It is a perfect fit for families and outdoor enthusiasts who want to be close to hiking trails and town amenities while still sleeping under the stars. Because the sites vary in size, it is best for those with mid-sized rigs or vans seeking an authentic California mountain experience. If you prioritize natural beauty and a central location for Eastern Sierra exploration, this campground is a top choice.

Wonderful place, but I had a spot right across from a big group of really rude, obnoxious people who allowed their kids to invade all sites. Really people? Please use good camp etiquette. Thank you.

This is an RV park. They actually had the week. End the week that I was there. Handicap waters gig Ed kayakid it was great. They take your kids out for a $150 a piece well worth the money. When I was there, the person was paraplegic.

Although not the Shady Rest from the old Beverly Hillbillies tv show, it’s a nice camp for tents or RVs. Full RV hookups. Highlight is the adjoining hiking trail. There is also a boat ramp Campsites are semi-private. There was no host or ranger. Book on Recreation.gov.

A fine campground with a convenient location. We liked the size and spacing of the sites, the ample shade from pine trees and the friendly camp host selling firewood. There’s a great network of pedestrian/bike paths here and throughout Mammoth. There were a lot of RV’s here, probably 70% of sites, we were in our van. Unfortunately our neighbors ran their generator most of the evening until 10 quiet hours. There’s also a bit of road noise from Hwy 203. But all in all it’s a nice spot in the woods to camp within a few miles of all sorts of beautiful alpine lakes.
