Inyo/Sage Flat
Overview
Sage Flat and its neighbor, Upper Sage Flat, offer a quintessential High Sierra experience within the Inyo National Forest. Located along the rushing waters of Big Pine Creek, these campgrounds provide a rugged, back-to-nature atmosphere for travelers. Rather than a manicured resort, visitors will find a serene landscape defined by towering Jeffrey pines and massive granite peaks, making it a peaceful retreat for those exploring the Eastern Sierra. The park is managed by the Forest Service, ensuring a natural wilderness vibe that remains preserved and quiet.
Location & Surroundings
Situated at an elevation of approximately 7,200 feet, the park sits in a deep, scenic canyon just west of Big Pine, California. The dramatic scenery is dominated by the jagged ridgelines of the Sierra Nevada mountains. The sound of the creek is a constant companion for campers, and the surrounding wilderness is home to diverse wildlife including mule deer and various bird species. The steep canyon walls provide plenty of shade throughout the day, keeping the temperatures much cooler than the Owens Valley floor below.
Amenities & Park Features
These sites are primarily designed for dry camping, meaning there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups available for RVs. Each individual site features a sturdy picnic table and fire ring, providing the basics for a traditional mountain campout. Facilities are intentionally limited to vault toilets and seasonal potable water spigots located throughout the loops. Because the access roads and paved spurs can be narrow with some tight turns, the park is most suitable for smaller RVs, camper vans, and truck campers.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw for many visitors is the immediate proximity to the Big Pine Lakes trail, which leads hikers toward the famous turquoise glacial waters and the massive Palisade Glacier. Anglers frequently visit to test their luck fishing for trout in the cold waters of Big Pine Creek, which runs directly through the camping area. Photography enthusiasts will find endless inspiration in the golden morning light hitting the majestic peaks, while the lack of light pollution makes it an incredible spot for stargazing at night.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is absolutely ideal for dedicated outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize direct access to mountain trailheads over luxury resort amenities. If you enjoy boondocking-style camping and want to completely disconnect from the digital world, Sage Flat is a perfect fit. It appeals most to travelers with smaller rigs or adventure vans who appreciate a quiet, scenic basecamp for exploring the high-altitude wonders of Inyo County. It is a favorite for those who want to wake up to the sounds of nature rather than highway traffic.

This is a beautiful campground amid mature ponderosa pine. The lower loop is first-come, first-serve, the upper loop is available for reservation. We had no problem getting our 24-ft travel trailer into a site. No hookups on any site in the lower loop, but potable water available.

Very nice campground 9 miles up Big Pine Canyon. Stayed 4 days. Large campsites and you can have campfires! Collecting wood is allowed as well. Big bear lockers for storing your food! Bathrooms are very well maintained. There’s a little store 1.5 miles up the road at the end which has everything you might need. Small grill too. We had Bacon Cheeseburgers that were awesome! Playground is next to store and Kids Fishing Pond. Sasquatch signs cracked us up. We did see Sage Grouse in the early morning. Creek is running pretty good. Lots of pools to sit and cool off in. Fishing was good, caught about 10, released them all. I’d definitely camp here again.

Beautiful campground. Traffic was light. Water spigots close by. I'm not a fan of vault toilets, though. We didn't have a reservation, but we found a site for 3 nights.

Beautiful mountain camping. And cooler than the valley.

I'm sad to say I talk to Dave and he will no longer be at the sage flat. He is working another camp near by. I going to miss Dave been going for the past 6 years and like hanging out with Dave when we camp.
