We were there during the week and it was very peaceful. Had a great site with partial sun and shade. Was not able to enjoy our stay as much as we would have liked due to the heat and humidity. A great place to stay if visiting people in Lansing or Grand Rapids! The waterquality leaves much to be desired though, and the showers definitely need a re-vamp. Wish we would have filled up at home. Drank bottled water during our stay. Overall a great park - a hidden GEM!

I really enjoyed the time I had here. There is soo much to see and explore, this is a very extensive recreation area. I will definitely have to continue to come back and explore. There are bike trails. Horse trails. Hiking trails. A lake. Many prairies. So much to choose from!

Ionia State Recreation Area has a nice, 3.65 mile easy to moderate hike around Sessions Lake. Make sure you follow the directions to the south side of the park to most easily find the trail. The trail is well marked overall. A little confusing in places where the trail intersects the disc golf course. The trail is not wheelchair accessible in several places, although on the north side of the lake, it is flat and either grassy or paved. On parts of the south side of the lake, a few areas have elevation changes of about 20 feet. Trails are well worn and maintained. We did step over a large downed branch. The one vault toilet used had no paper. The park map on the DNR website does not include much trail details, but you can pick up a map at the honor system payment shack or see the photo below. Photos include examples of trail markers and bridges. While we came Memorial Day weekend, this is a nice place all year.

Pretty area, pretty lake. Here after school has been back on session do it's been quiet. Swimming area not the best, lots of green water... ew. The beach itself is nice. Lots of geese and seagulls.
