J. Strom Thurmond Lake - COE/Ridge Road
Overview
Ridge Road Campground is a premier Army Corps of Engineers destination situated on the Georgia side of the massive J. Strom Thurmond Lake. This park offers a tranquil escape with over 60 campsites, many of which provide unobstructed views of the water. As one of the largest man-made lakes in the Southeast, the setting provides a perfect backdrop for a peaceful RV getaway focused on the natural beauty of the Savannah River basin.
Location & Surroundings
Located in Appling, Georgia, the campground is tucked away on a series of wooded peninsulas that stretch deep into the lake. While the environment feels secluded and wild, it is only a short drive from the city of Augusta. The surrounding area is characterized by dense forests of pine and hardwoods, creating a natural canopy that provides ample shade and privacy for travelers seeking a quiet break from the sun.
Amenities & Park Features
The park is well-equipped for modern RVers, offering sites with 50-amp electrical hookups and reliable water connections. For convenience, guests have access to multiple bathhouses with hot showers, a laundry facility, and a centralized dump station. Recreation is at the forefront here, with a dual-lane boat ramp and a courtesy dock making it incredibly easy for visitors to launch their vessels directly from the campground premises.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the proximity to the Bartram Trail, a renowned path for hiking and mountain biking that winds through the Georgia forest. The lake itself is a haven for anglers chasing striped bass and crappie. For a change of pace, a quick trip into Augusta offers historic sites and local dining, while the Mistletoe State Park nearby offers additional miles of exploration for those who love the local flora and fauna.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for waterfront enthusiasts and boaters who want easy access to the lake right from their doorstep. It caters perfectly to families looking for a quiet, safe environment where children can play at the on-site playground. If you prefer the serenity of nature and the simplicity of COE parks over the bustling atmosphere of high-density commercial resorts, Ridge Road is an excellent choice for your next trip.

Excellent backin space (67) great for Truck.camper or Van's and smaller campers. Electric and water hookups, fire ring, food prep and picnic table. Nice and level. Showers w/hot water within walking distance. Dump station and trash on site. Really quiet given it Mothersday weekend and most sites were filled. Also included the site next to us (66) which had just emptied..again a large site for bigger RV's and right on the lake.

COE parks are always the greatest. This is no different. Private sites surrounded by great scenery. As always, a friendly, knowledgeable staff. Thank you!
