Ja'k Territorial Park

Overview

Ja'k Territorial Park serves as a premier destination for travelers navigating the northern reaches of the Dempster Highway. Named for the Gwich’in word for berry, this park offers a unique Arctic camping experience characterized by its rugged beauty and quiet atmosphere. It provides a peaceful retreat just outside the town of Inuvik, where the boreal forest begins to transition into the sprawling tundra. Visitors can enjoy the serene environment while preparing for further northern exploration toward the Arctic Ocean.

Location & Surroundings

Situated on a high ridge, the park overlooks the vast Mackenzie Delta. This elevated position provides guests with sweeping views of the surrounding wilderness, including the distant, jagged peaks of the Richardson Mountains. The environment is dominated by hardy spruce trees and local flora, creating a secluded atmosphere that feels worlds away from civilization while remaining conveniently close to the regional hub of Inuvik. The area is particularly known for its stunning vistas and the unique light of the north.

Amenities & Park Features

The facility caters to various camping styles with a total of 36 campsites, including 11 sites equipped with power for RV travelers. Essential services include a clean washroom building with hot showers, drinking water stations, and a convenient dump station for self-contained units. One of the park's most popular features is the tall observation tower, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and the midnight sun. Each site also features a fire pit and picnic table, perfect for enjoying the long summer evenings.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Visitors are just minutes away from the town of Inuvik, where they can explore the iconic Igloo Church and local galleries featuring Northern indigenous art. Many travelers use the park as a final staging point before driving the Inuvik-Tuktoyaktuk Highway to dip their toes in the Arctic Ocean. Within the park boundaries, guests enjoy well-maintained walking trails, exceptional birdwatching opportunities, and seasonal berry picking. The tower provides an excellent vantage point for viewing the complex waterways of the delta below.

Great option for camping just outside of Inuvik! Hot and free showers that are open 24/7 so they are available no matter what time you arrive. A handful of level, powered campsites. Private, treed non powered sites and some even with levelled pads for tents. Each campground had a concrete picnic table and firepit. Bathrooms were clean, playground for kids, viewing tower to overlook the river and stunning sunsets. Highly recommend and will be back.

We camped here in September 2022 on our expedition to from Tuktoyaktuk, over Labor Day weekend. Intended to stay just one night, on the way up to Tuk, but ended up staying a second night that weekend, because the bridge was 'out' crossing the Eagle River. The campground is a good price, nice private sites around around the perimeter, particularly on the west side. Washrooms were very clean and the sites were well maintained. Staff was helpful, particularly with information about the condition of the bridge down the Dempster and the updates on if/when it would be passable.

Tent camped there on 6/26/2023. Sites are on the smaller size. Very clean restrooms and showers. Staff is extremely friendly. Oh, and very, very solid picnic tables. Also, ate breakfast at the hospital 9am as nothing is open early.

The hiking is quite nice and there is a tower with beautiful views of the delta. Lots of bugs though - bring your bug spray!

Lov'in the nice hot showers and clean washrooms. oh and they have a playground tooo. So nice to offer this at a territorial park and just outside of Inuvik. A variety of site sizes and a few with hydro. Open sites and more private sites also and potable water!! We stayed an extra day and explore Inuvik more because we were able to enjoy the services at this park!
