Jacob Lake Campground

Overview

Jacob Lake Campground is a quintessential high-altitude escape situated within the Kaibab National Forest. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, this destination offers a rustic, forested environment that feels far removed from the desert heat of the surrounding region. It serves as a peaceful gateway for travelers seeking a natural setting nestled among Ponderosa pines and aspen trees. The park prioritizes a traditional camping experience, perfect for those who appreciate quiet evenings and the crisp, cool air found at an elevation of 7,900 feet.

Location & Surroundings

Located in Fredonia, Arizona, Jacob Lake sits at the junction of Highway 89A and Highway 67. Its strategic location makes it the northern gateway to the Grand Canyon, specifically the North Rim. The surrounding landscape is defined by the expansive Kaibab Plateau, which provides a stunning backdrop for outdoor enthusiasts. Travelers often choose this site for its proximity to the scenic mountain vistas and the lush, high-desert forests that characterize this unique section of northern Arizona.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground focuses on essential services to maintain its natural charm. Visitors will find sites suitable for tents and smaller RVs, featuring fire rings and picnic tables at each location. While hookups are limited, the campground provides access to vault toilets and potable water spigots throughout the loop. The site is noted for its dense forest canopy, which offers excellent shade and privacy for those looking to disconnect and enjoy the serenity of the national forest.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the immediate camping area, the region is a hub for outdoor adventure. Most visitors spend their time exploring the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, which is roughly 45 miles away. Hikers and wildlife photographers frequent the area to spot the rare Kaibab squirrel, which is endemic to the plateau. Additionally, the scenic byways and forest service roads offer endless opportunities for cycling, birdwatching, and observing the diverse flora of the high-elevation climate.

Who This Park Is Best For

Jacob Lake Campground is ideal for self-contained RVers and tent campers who prefer secluded, wilderness-focused stays over modern, full-service resorts. It is a fantastic choice for those touring northern Arizona who want a quiet home base before heading into the National Park. If you value peaceful nights under the stars and direct access to mountain trails, this location provides the perfect balance of accessibility and tranquil, off-the-grid living in a beautiful woodland setting.

Stayed here in Oct. 2025 and everything is open! We even got one of the camp host spots when they didnt return after evacuating for the fire. The vault toilets on site are spotless and there is potable water for filling if needed. The Jacob Lake Inn & Restaurant is right across the street and is DELICIOUS! Get the pot pie and some cookies while youre here. We were able to drive to all of the lookouts on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.

Beautiful spot, easy to get to. $30 a night was a little rough to stomach for what was offered. I think we saw a camp host but they never introduced themselves.

What a wonderful time we had! We stayed in the Group A site. Beautiful Ramada and area. The bathrooms were cleaned daily and the trash was collected twice a day. The only thing we didn’t love was that there wasn’t actual individual sites. There were just divets around the Ramada. In the end, it was actually decent to have everyone face that way. Also the campfire pit had benches. We would love to come back here depending on what happens with this fire right now. It’s just a quick jaunt to the north rim but from what I’ve been told, it’s burned down 😭. The store and lodge across the street is fantastic and has amazing cookies!

Clean campground with camp host's that do an excellent job. A little loud so I would get to the back as much as possible. 40 miles from the campground to the North Rim NP. Beautiful drive. Clean restrooms. Worked well for us. We were in the National park most of the time.
