Jasper/Kerkeslin

Overview

Kerkeslin Campground offers a secluded, primitive escape within the majestic boundaries of Jasper National Park. Nestled along the world-renowned Icefields Parkway, this Parks Canada facility provides a quiet, forested alternative to the larger and more commercialized campgrounds closer to the Jasper townsite. It is characterized by its high-elevation sub-alpine setting and its location near the banks of the Athabasca River, providing a genuine wilderness experience for self-contained RV travelers who appreciate nature in its rawest form.

Location & Surroundings

Located approximately 36 kilometers south of the Jasper townsite, the park sits prominently at the base of the massive Mount Kerkeslin. The surrounding terrain is dominated by dense evergreen forests and rugged mountain peaks that define the Canadian Rockies. Its strategic position along the Icefields Parkway makes it a convenient and scenic stopover for those traveling between Jasper and Banff, offering a sense of isolation that is increasingly rare in the national park system.

Amenities & Park Features

As a rustic campground, Kerkeslin is designed for simplicity and self-sufficiency. The sites consist of unpaved gravel pads that can accommodate smaller RVs and camper vans. Amenities are limited to essential wilderness features:

  • Pit toilets and basic garbage disposal units
  • Individual picnic tables and fire rings at each site
  • Bear-proof lockers for safe food storage in wildlife territory

There are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups available, and no cell service is present, encouraging a total disconnect from the modern world.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw of this location is its proximity to the powerful Athabasca Falls, located just a few minutes away by car. Adventurers can explore various hiking trails that offer stunning views of the surrounding valley or spend the afternoon fishing along the Athabasca River. Because Jasper is a Dark Sky Preserve, the campground serves as an exceptional vantage point for stargazing, where the lack of light pollution reveals the Milky Way in incredible detail against the mountain silhouettes.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is perfectly suited for self-contained RVers and van-lifers who prioritize peace and natural beauty over modern resort amenities. It is an ideal fit for those seeking a primitive camping experience and travelers who want to avoid the heavy crowds of the main townsite. If you prefer the sound of wind through the pines over the hum of a neighbor's air conditioner, this rugged mountain retreat will likely fit your travel style perfectly.

One of my favorite campgrounds in Jasper National Park. Not for big rigs. Good tree cover, well spaced camp sites. Lots of good firewood.

It’s a shame the fire started here , but the damage is minimal in the campground.I love this campground, it nice and quiet in the back spots but still close enough to drive to catch some jasper sites!

Unfortunately, parts of this campground was affected by wildfires last year but still a really nice spot on the Athabasca River.

The closest first come first serve campsite to Jasper. Great to do day trips from. Right on the river and you can access it easily. Beautiful views of the mountains at the river. Like all the campgrounds it is kept clean and in good standing. It is right in the trees a d I thought the bugs may be bad. It was good. Keep in mind I stayed in the middle of August.

Great little campground, quiet, clean, self registration. One small section by the river, sites are a bit more open. We stayed in the other larger loop with large private sites (lots of trees between the sites). Close to highway but we couldn't hear the traffic too much and it died off at night. Very clean outhouses and friendly staff.
