Jasper/Pocahontas

Overview

Pocahontas Campground offers a serene escape within the eastern boundary of Jasper National Park, Alberta. Nestled in a lush forest of lodgepole pines, this park provides a quieter, more secluded alternative to the busier sites located closer to the Jasper townsite. It serves as a rustic gateway for those looking to immerse themselves in the Canadian Rockies without the distractions of modern connectivity, focusing instead on the raw beauty and quietude of the mountain wilderness.

Location & Surroundings

Situated approximately 45 kilometers east of the Jasper townsite, the park is conveniently located near the Miette Road junction. The surrounding landscape is defined by rugged mountain peaks, dense greenery, and the nearby Athabasca River. Its position near the park's East Gate makes it an ideal first stop for travelers entering from Edmonton. The atmosphere is deeply peaceful, often visited by local wildlife like deer and elk that frequently wander through the shaded campsites during the early morning hours.

Amenities & Park Features

As a dry camping facility, Pocahontas emphasizes a traditional outdoor experience for RVers. While there are no power, water, or sewer hookups at individual sites, the park is equipped with essential features including flush toilets and communal treated water stations. Each campsite features a heavy-duty fire pit and a sturdy picnic table, perfect for evening gatherings under the stars. Travelers should utilize the provided bear-proof food lockers, which are vital for maintaining safety in this active wildlife corridor.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for guests staying here is the immediate proximity to the Miette Hot Springs, located just a short drive up the winding mountain road. Visitors can soak in the hottest mineral springs in the Canadian Rockies or challenge themselves on the Sulphur Skyline Trail, which offers world-class panoramic summit views. For those who enjoy river activities, the Athabasca Valley provides ample opportunities for photography, birdwatching, and exploring the historic Punchbowl Falls located nearby.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for RVers who prefer a self-contained mountain experience over resort-style amenities. It appeals strongly to hikers, photographers, and nature lovers who prioritize silence and scenery over digital connectivity. While the park can accommodate various rig sizes, it is best suited for those prepared for no-hookup camping. It is a perfect match for travelers seeking a quiet, secluded mountain retreat while remaining within a reasonable drive of Jasper's most iconic landmarks.

Stayed here for 2 nights. Yes it was really cold when the winds started but can’t argue with that as they recently had a wildfire. We had to move RV sites as we needed power but unfortunately then the toilets were really far away from us. We couldn’t walk to the showers when it was dark as there were no path lights around the campgrounds & could’ve easily gotten lost. The showers were sometimes cold at night & only ran on a 15 second timer so you’re constantly standing in the cold when the water turns off. Bathrooms were always clean. Easy access to firewood. If they didn’t close the other bathrooms closer to us, would’ve been a 5/5 for this campgrounds but because they were so far away it made it harder for us - this was our only complaint about Wapiti. Beautiful scenery, definitely wake up for sunrise if you can as the mountains glow during sunrise.

It was the only camping in Jasper that was open (which is a positive!) (13. Oct. 2025) It was however just a „parking lot with electric hookup“ and nothing special. The view was amazing (even though the forest burnt down lately 😢). (You could have gotten a bit more expensive lots that are not as „parking“ and more privacy but also more costly. Also the water was a bit of a problem, if you do not shower early enough, you may don‘t have any more water to shower! (This might be fixed by the time you read this, but still wanted to share it). Seni dump is in Jasper village, not on the camping site.

This is a great campground! With everything this area has been through, I found it beautiful and it was one of my favorite places and areas. Our campsite was by the river and I loved our morning breakfast show of the elk bugling and walking through the campground! Nice facilities and plenty of firewood. Don’t hesitate to stay at this great campground!

We were there end of September. Like people mentioned, everything is burned. It looks a bit sad at first but the campsite itself is great. You don’t get privacy between lots because there are no longer trees. But it didn’t bother us. The shared facilities are clean, there is heat in the toilets. And a sink for the dishes outside with warm water. We didn’t use the showers but we saw steam coming out of it so must have been warm. Good internet reception. We saw some animals around the park! Great location right outside Jasper. It is close to the main road but the sounds didn’t bother us, it was quiet.

A year on from the 2024 devastating fire and the campgrounds are being rebuilt. The new blocks are fantastic very clean and warm. The staff were excellent and helpful giving you some great advice. Very quiet grounds . The local bus only runs 3 times a day so its about 50 min walk to town but on a great path and cycleway.
