Jasper/Wabasso

Overview

Wabasso Campground offers a quintessential Rocky Mountain experience within the iconic Jasper National Park. Known for its scenic tranquility and slower pace compared to larger campgrounds, it provides a rustic retreat for travelers seeking a deeper connection with nature. Managed by Parks Canada, this site emphasizes a traditional camping atmosphere while accommodating various RV sizes. It serves as an ideal base for exploring the rugged beauty of the Alberta wilderness and the surrounding peaks.

Location & Surroundings

Nestled along the banks of the Athabasca River, the park is situated on Highway 93A, a quieter alternative to the main Icefields Parkway. The surroundings are characterized by dense pine forests and dramatic mountain peaks that dominate the horizon. Its location provides a perfect balance between seclusion and accessibility, keeping visitors away from the heavy traffic of the main highway while still being within a short drive of the Jasper townsite and its local amenities.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features a mix of unserviced and power-only sites, making it important for RVers to plan for water and waste management. While there are no on-site showers, the campground provides flush toilets and treated water taps for convenience throughout the loops. Each site typically includes a fire pit and a picnic table, encouraging outdoor living. A sani-dump station is available to service self-contained rigs, ensuring a comfortable stay in a wild, natural setting.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure is just moments away with the Valley of the Five Lakes trailhead nearby, offering stunning turquoise waters and family-friendly hiking paths. For those seeking alpine vistas, the road to Mount Edith Cavell is easily accessible, providing views of hanging glaciers and high-altitude meadows. The Athabasca River itself offers opportunities for photography and wildlife viewing, where elk and deer are frequently spotted along the shoreline during the quiet morning hours.

Who This Park Is Best For

Wabasso is the perfect choice for nature-focused RVers who prefer a quieter, more authentic park experience over high-end resort amenities. It is particularly well-suited for mid-sized rigs and those who enjoy a sense of privacy provided by the natural forest screening. Families looking to disconnect from technology and couples seeking a romantic mountain backdrop will find the peaceful environment of this campground truly revitalizing during their Canadian Rockies journey.

The sites are very big here but there is very little in shade as most trees have been removed. We fit our van, 10 man tent, 12x12 shade tent, 11 people around the fire and still had lots of room. Lots of wood was provided and some bathrooms have dish washing stations outside. Definitely a great place to camp.

Beautiful Campsite C34. Backs up to river and neighbor sites further away. Only wish is that there were services for RV and Trailers in the campsites. Fantastic campsite and campground. Very quiet at night and in the morning. At night you can hear the river rushing! Public restrooms are great too. No pit toilets and there are sinks to wash your hands. We would choose to camp here again.

A little out of town, which made it nice and quiet, respectful patrons, so great overall. Facilities were clean, staff were friendly and helpful. Would recommend

It is like a Canadian moonscape. Last winter they cut down the beetle killed trees, which left very few trees except in one area. Similar to Wapiti and Whistlers. They also left foot tall stumps. They are very restrictive. Quiet time 2300 to 0700, that's fine. No campfire past 2200. Generator use restricted to two 2 hour periods during the day. They make irregular patrols to ensure you are biding by the rules.

Really great campground. We were in the tents only loop and right on the river. The views were amazing and it was wonderful to easily access the river and go walking and skipping rocks. Free firewood in a large pile. Flushing toilets. No showers unfortunately. Huge stalls with lots of privacy. Staff was very friendly. Very large campground. Some stalls up top looked wide open and close together so I probably wouldn't enjoy it there. Will definitely come back!
