Jasper/Wilcox

Overview

Wilcox Campground offers a rugged and authentic mountain experience within the southern reaches of Jasper National Park. Managed by Parks Canada, this high-elevation destination provides a primitive base for travelers exploring the world-renowned Icefields Parkway. Unlike the more developed hubs closer to the townsite, Wilcox emphasizes a quiet connection with nature, offering subalpine scenery that is often regarded as some of the most dramatic in the Canadian Rockies. It is a seasonal park, typically welcoming visitors from June through September, depending on snow levels.

Location & Surroundings

Located approximately 100 kilometers south of the Jasper townsite, the campground sits near the border of Jasper and Banff National Parks. Its proximity to the Columbia Icefield makes it one of the highest campgrounds in the region, situated at an elevation of over 2,000 meters. The surroundings are defined by the towering presence of Mount Athabasca and Mount Andromeda. Guests are treated to crisp mountain air and a landscape of stunted subalpine forests, with the constant presence of ancient glaciers shimmering in the distance.

Amenities & Park Features

As a rustic facility, Wilcox is designed for those who enjoy unplugged camping. There are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups available, making it essential for RVers to arrive with full tanks and charged batteries. The park features vault toilets and communal hand pumps for water. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a fire pit, though a fire permit is required for use. Due to the presence of local wildlife, the campground provides bear-proof food lockers to ensure a safe environment for both humans and animals.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw of this location is its direct access to the Wilcox Pass Trail, which begins right at the campground. This hike is famous for its panoramic views of the Athabasca Glacier and the iconic Red Chairs placed by Parks Canada. A very short drive leads to the Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre, where visitors can experience the glacier up close via massive ice explorers. For those interested in photography, the nearby Sunwapta Falls and various turquoise alpine lakes along the Icefields Parkway offer endless opportunities for spectacular shots.

Who This Park Is Best For

Wilcox Campground is ideal for self-contained RVers and van-lifers who prefer stunning vistas over resort-style amenities. Because of the tighter turns and smaller site pads, it is best suited for small to mid-sized RVs rather than large big-rigs. It is a perfect fit for avid hikers and nature enthusiasts who want to stay close to the trailheads. If you are looking for a peaceful, high-altitude escape where the focus is on the stars and the mountains, this campground will perfectly fit your travel style.

My favorite hike in Jasper National Park. Don’t miss it.

The trail is extremely breathtaking. Convenient access to parking from the main road. The entire trail is uphill and back. It's divided into 3 sections that characterize the entire mountain: the forested section (up to the red chairs), the grassy section where you can see animals like bighorn sheep, and the exposed rock section. Each section is beautiful and impressive in its own right. The last section was very cold and windy, so it's recommended to bring a sweater. At the end you are standing across the Columbia ice field and get a good sight on it.

A couple of steps onto the trail from this trailhead and you are engulfed in trees. Certainly a trail that is worth taking regardless of how far you can get on it. It is a georgous beginning through some trees that assist you along your way. Out of the tree line you have amazing views of glaciers and once in the pass you are surrounded by mountains.

This was a really great trail to hike on. The beginning was a very steep incline and was just harsh at first. The forest however, was very beautiful and early on there was an incredible lake. The views at the top were worth the long hike, and there were sections with full views while on the trail. I would recommend this hike, but just be aware that the beginning is pretty rough.

Awesome hike. Amazing views for minimal work. Can stop at the pass or branch to the left to get a view across Hwy 93 to the Columbia Icefields. The trail is up and down to the lookout, but the extra time and effort is definitely worth it!
