Jefferson Lake

Overview

Jefferson Lake State Park offers a peaceful retreat among the rolling hills of Jefferson County. Centered around a 17-acre lake, this 933-acre park is known for its quiet atmosphere and dense hardwood forests. RV travelers visiting Richmond, OH, will find a destination that prioritizes natural beauty and outdoor recreation. It provides a serene backdrop for those looking to escape the bustle of city life while enjoying the rugged landscapes and scenic vistas of Eastern Ohio.

Location & Surroundings

Nestled in the heart of the Appalachian foothills, the park is situated just outside Richmond near the Ohio River. The surrounding area is characterized by steep ridges and narrow valleys, creating a secluded feel that is highly valued by visitors. The elevation changes throughout the park offer excellent vantage points of the wooded ravines, making it a prime spot for photographers and nature enthusiasts who appreciate the diverse topography and seasonal foliage unique to this region.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features nearly 100 campsites, including electric hookup sites specifically designed for RVs. Guests have access to essential facilities such as a sanitary dump station, seasonal shower houses, and flush toilets. The namesake lake is restricted to electric motors only, ensuring a quiet environment for fishing and kayaking. Additional features include a small swimming beach and over 13 miles of multi-use trails that cater to hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders looking for a forested challenge.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

While the park feels remote, it is close to several local points of interest. Travelers can visit nearby Steubenville, known as the City of Murals, to explore local history and public art. For those seeking more outdoor adventure, Fernwood State Forest is a short drive away, offering additional hunting and hiking opportunities. The proximity to the Ohio River also allows for convenient access to larger waterway activities and scenic drives along the historic riverfront corridors.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for rustic camping enthusiasts who prefer a quiet, natural setting over a busy resort atmosphere. Because of the hilly terrain and winding park roads, it is best suited for travelers who enjoy a slower pace. Families who enjoy self-contained recreation like birdwatching, fishing, and traditional campfire experiences will find the park particularly rewarding. If you are looking for a place to disconnect from technology and immerse yourself in nature, this park is a perfect fit.

It's one of the smaller parks. We did some ebiking, and hiking. It hilly so good with the bikes, hard for the hiking. Lake is more of a pond, very small. Beautiful scenery

Very nice, well kept campground. Took inflatable kayaks on the lake for a relaxing few hours. Caught bluegills, saw herons, wood ducks, and escaped the digital world.

This was my childhood play ground. Now as an adult you can't swim but the trails are just beautiful.
