Jimsmith Lake
Overview
Jimsmith Lake Provincial Park provides a serene escape just minutes from the urban center of Cranbrook. This 13-hectare park is defined by its mature Douglas fir and larch forest, which provides ample shade and privacy for visitors. It serves as a popular retreat for locals and travelers alike who are looking to enjoy the beauty of the East Kootenays without venturing far into the backcountry. The lake itself is the centerpiece, offering a calm environment for non-motorized boating and nature observation.
Location & Surroundings
Situated on the southern edge of the city, the park sits within the scenic Rocky Mountain Trench. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills and the tranquil waters of Jimsmith Lake. Because it is so close to Cranbrook, guests have the unique advantage of enjoying a secluded lakeside atmosphere while remaining less than five kilometers away from major grocery stores, fuel stations, and regional services. This makes it an excellent base for exploring the broader Kootenay region.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a rustic provincial park offering 28 vehicle-accessible campsites. While there are no electrical hookups or sani-dumps on-site, the park features a well-maintained day-use area with a sandy beach and a playground. Basic facilities include pit toilets and a seasonal hand pump for water, though travelers should bring their own potable water or be prepared to treat it. The campsites are primarily back-in and can accommodate a variety of RV sizes, though larger rigs should navigate the access roads with care.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Beyond the lake, visitors can explore the rich history of the area at the Cranbrook History Centre, known for its extensive railcar collection. For those seeking active adventures, the nearby North Star Rails-to-Trails offers a paved path for cycling between Cranbrook and Kimberley. Nature enthusiasts will also appreciate the proximity to the Steeples Range, providing stunning backdrops and additional hiking opportunities just a short drive from the campground.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for families and recreational swimmers who want easy access to the water and a safe place for children to play. It is a perfect fit for RVers who prefer a natural, no-frills camping experience over a commercial resort. If you enjoy starting your morning with a quiet paddle or a short hike through the woods before heading into town for supplies, this provincial gem offers the perfect balance of convenience and authentic British Columbia nature.

Really nice campground with large sites. The lake is really nice and clean. There is a lot of wildlife in the area. The park ranger was really nice and willing to help with any questions that we had. We showed up with 7 people in our party and set up 4 tents between a double site. There was still plenty of room on the site and ample space between sites to where your neighbors aren't bothered with a little noise.

Great little campground with minimal noise. Day use currently undergoing construction but when its done it will be amazing! Great family friendly swimming at the day use area. Jetty/pontoon to jump off, small crayfish to catch, friendly ducks and a perfect location to SUP, paddle or walk. Highly recommend for camping/visiting.

Quiet, peaceful, close to town and has so many great opportunities. The campground is a great size that keeps the feeling of being uncrowded and quaint. Currently the dayuse area is under construction. It wont be open untill July.

This park is located just outside Cranbrook, BC Canada on Hwy 95. It is located near the lake shore just far enough off the hwy for quiet days and nights. The beach is a short walk from the campground with a large parking area for day use and campers. Grass area is pitted by marmot dens but there is a nice sandy beach and shallow shore for swimmers. A dock is provided for fishing and swimming well away from the boat launch. Picnic tables and benches are nestled under trees along the shoreline. The campground is on a hill side with well space, large, leveled sites with good privacy. The park is well maintained. There are no reservations for this park but we had no trouble getting a site on a Monday afternoon in mid summer. Sand boat launch with room to park truck and trailer. No services at sites and no sani-dump but one is available in town. Drinking water but no showers. Nice overnight park.
