John H. Kerr Dam & Reservoir - COE/North Bend

Overview

North Bend Park is a premier destination managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, situated on the expansive John H. Kerr Reservoir. Known locally as Buggs Island Lake, this park offers a peaceful escape into Virginia’s natural landscape. It provides a harmonious blend of shaded forest canopy and shimmering waterfront views, making it one of the most sought-after outdoor recreational spots in the region for RV travelers seeking a genuine connection with nature.

Location & Surroundings

Tucked away in Boydton, VA, the park sits at a scenic point where the Roanoke River is transformed by the dam. The surrounding landscape is characterized by rolling hills and dense hardwoods that provide ample privacy and shade for most campsites. Because it is located adjacent to the John H. Kerr Dam, visitors are treated to a unique geographical setting where the lake's vast blue waters meet the impressive engineering of the dam structure.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is well-equipped for modern RVers, offering a variety of sites featuring electric and water hookups. Travelers will appreciate the convenience of well-maintained bathhouses with hot showers and accessible laundry facilities. For recreation, the park boasts multiple boat ramps for easy lake access, several sandy swimming beaches, and an 18-hole disc golf course. The sites are generally spacious, catering to various rig sizes while maintaining a rustic, wooded atmosphere.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Anglers flock to these waters for some of the best striped bass and crappie fishing in the Southeast. If you prefer land-based activities, the Liberty Nature Trail offers a scenic route for hiking and bird watching through the lakeside forest. Just a short drive from the campground, the Joseph S. J. Tanner II Environmental Education Center provides fascinating insights into the dam’s history and local wildlife, making it an excellent educational stop for visitors of all ages.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal fit for family campers and outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize natural beauty and water-based recreation over resort-style commercialism. It is a fantastic choice for those who travel with boats or kayaks, as the water access is integrated seamlessly into the park layout. If you are looking for a serene lakeside retreat to enjoy the quiet rhythms of nature, North Bend Park delivers an authentic and refreshing Virginia camping experience.

Very nice attendants. Clean and beautiful park! The lake was down about 10 ft so crews could do some work on the shoreline.
