John Martin Res/Lake Hasty Rec. Area
Overview
Overview
John Martin Reservoir State Park, famously known as the Sapphire on the Plains, provides a refreshing and vital oasis in the vast, sunny landscape of southeastern Colorado. The Lake Hasty Recreation Area is the park’s primary hub for campers, nestled conveniently just below the massive dam of the state’s second-largest body of water. This destination offers a peaceful contrast to the surrounding arid high plains, featuring a large, cool reservoir and the lush greenery found within the Arkansas River valley.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in the quiet town of Hasty, CO, this park is a centerpiece of the historic Santa Fe Trail region, where the horizon feels endless. The surrounding environment consists of expansive shortgrass prairies and rolling plains that stretch toward the sky, punctuated by the deep blue waters of the reservoir. Its remote location far away from major metropolitan centers makes it a premier spot for stargazing and experiencing the quiet, undisturbed stillness of the Colorado plains.
Amenities & Park Features
The Lake Hasty campground is specifically designed to accommodate modern RV travelers with 109 electrical campsites offering both 30 and 50-amp service under a canopy of mature shade trees. Guests can enjoy updated conveniences such as coin-operated showers, laundry facilities, and clean flush toilets. The park is well-equipped for long-distance travelers with two dump stations and multiple potable water hydrants. For recreation, the area features a dedicated swimming beach, a playground, and numerous shaded picnic sites.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Anglers and boaters are drawn to the reservoir for its excellent trophy fishing opportunities, with the waters being home to walleye, bass, and catfish. The park is also recognized as a world-class destination for birding, where visitors often spot rare species like the piping plover and least tern. Just a short drive away, history enthusiasts can visit Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site, a reconstructed 1840s fur-trading post that offers a glimpse into the region’s frontier heritage.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for nature lovers and birdwatchers who appreciate a slower pace of travel and wide-open spaces. It serves as an excellent basecamp for families looking for a water-based vacation without the heavy crowds found at mountain-centric parks further west. RVers seeking a well-maintained stopover with reliable amenities while traversing the eastern plains of Colorado will find John Martin Reservoir to be a welcoming and scenic choice for their journey.

Nice campground next to a little lake below the dam. Showers (50 cents for 3 minutes) and electric and water sites under trees or out in the open.

It was a cool State Park close to reservoir with two boat ramps. Staff was pleasant and park was clean. If you looking for a High Plains Desert feel this is a good place. FYI there are no trees, but you do get an amazing sunrise and sunset view.

The office staff were very friendly and helpful. The day pass is definitely worth it. The only downside is that the hiking trail could be better marked, as it was a bit confusing at times. Overall, a very nice place.

Great time at the lake. Water was low but good for tubing, fishing, and plenty of beach to play.
